Hey all,

I'm interviewing at UCSF in a few weeks and plan to stay over the weekend to enjoy the city. I found a great rate (maybe too good?) at The Commodore Hotel near Union Square (825 Sutter Street). Any one know the hotel or the immediate area?

Thanks!

I don't know anything about that hotel, but I've found tripadvisor.com to have useful reviews that people write in.

That's a great location for enjoying the city. Very close to Union Square, which is a huge shopping area with some fun clubs, a theater and many (touristy, mediocre) restaurants. Along Powell Street are several trolley stops to take you to North Beach where the genuinely good restaurants and cafes are located (of course you still have to watch out for the overpriced tourist trap restaurants). You can always walk to North Beach if you are motivated to hike up a tremendously huge hill...NOT a trivial endeavor but I have personally done it several times. Another perk is that there is a BART station close by so you can hop over to the Embarcadero with no problem, and from there you can walk or take a trolley to the touristy pier area. (It's painfully touristy, but still fun if your enjoyment of frolicking sea lions is stronger than your pride. 😉 )

However, it's not at all close to UCSF, so maybe the night before the interview you'd want to stay somewhere else.

the union square hotels can be pretty pricey, and i suspect the commodore is an older hotel a mere block or two off from the "action". in the heart of union square there is arguably some of the best shopping on the west coast and the powell muni/bart station. hop on the n-judah for a 15 minute muni ride and you are literally at the doorstep of ucsf. if you got a good rate at the hotel, i'd say book it.

Thanks for the advice.

Good luck to everyone on the interview trail!

Actually, it's very easy to get to UCSF from there. Just walk down to Powell Street and head down towards Market (south). From there, instead of getting on BART, get on MUNI, which has an underground railway car named N-Judah that runs right out to UCSF. Door to door would take about 25-30 minutes.
