is there an affordable hotel walking distance from cornell? i ran a whole bunch of internet searches and am disgusted at what's considered cheap today. "70% discounts! $999/night!" what about youth hostels? any advice would be greatly appreciated...

yeah, i don't think you're gonna find much that works with a student's budget.
stay with a student host!

have already asked about that. apparently cornell doesn't have a student host program... i was told that they would try to set something up, but couldn't guarantee anything. nyc can be so frustrating.

wow. seriously? i can't remember what was offered last year, since i came into the city the morning of, but i would be shocked if they didn't offer you SOMETHING, forcing you to have to resort to hotels. man, that would suck.
good luck with that!

I work right next to cornell and there are no hotels in the immediate area to cornell. And being that it is tourist season in NYC, the cheapest you will find is on the church steps.

Do you need to be in NYC or can you stay in North Jersey. You can stay in Hoboken and take the PATH, same with Jersey City. You can stay in Seacacus and take the bus in.

When do you have to be at Cornell

stay with a host, otherwise try trump towers

Try the hotels in queens or brooklyn. They are considerably cheaper then hotels in manhattan.

There's a hostel in NYC, on Amsterdam & 105th. Just do a search. I do know that you need to book in advance as lots of backpackers stay there. From there to Cornell will take you less than an hour by the subway.

Actually there are lots of hostels in NYC...

The Bentley is a good hotel. $150/night. I think it's on E. 63rd Street.

thanks for all the responses! i need to be at cornell by around 11, so it seems like the best option is to stay outside of manhattan? i'm just worried about walking around w/luggage high heels and all.

Try priceline.com for a cheap NYC hotel. You can often get a really nice room for under $80 or so.

you can definately get students to host you - we get emails requesting hosts all the time - just let admissions know that you want one.

if you want a reasonable hotel room - the Helmsley Medical Tower has rooms available for ~120 [not exactly MicroTel, clearly]. call ahead to find out.

I stayed at the Bentley, and they upgraded me to a superkick@ss junior suite with a wall full of windows. And it's really not bad, pice-wise, considering. I had an easy walk in to the interview in the morning and a very happy walk back in the afternoon. 😍

stay at the west side ymca on the sw corner of central park. great location. i stayed there this saturday. it was clean, you get a tv w/sportscenter, plus it's only $60/night. what a steal. 😳)

the school can usually set you up.

michigan state doesnt have a student host program but i told them that i would not be able to afford the costs of lodging there...a student from the adcom...emailed me the next day and offered me a place to stay.

just give em a reminder....so they know its somewhat urgent...even though it is the student's desire to look at the notice the office sends out and do something about it.

i do wish you good luck....

dude, stay with a student host. will save you lots of money and a hussle. also, you could call cornell's admission office and ask them to refer a place. they should be pretty good about that.

thanks to everyone and their suggestions. i just booked a room at the newton hotel, which is a bit farther away, but was $90. for anyone else who is interested, the website is http://www.newyorkhotel.com/newton/newton.htm. it's best to book online. i called to make reservations and some hostile lady lied and said no rooms were available. i chose this over the hostels because thought a private bath would be good the day before an interview. in any case, thanks again for all the help!
