Hey guys, I am applying to NYU and will probably end up going there. As a native New Yorker I know that the city is extremelly expensive to live in. I was thinking of getting an apartment in brooklyn for about $700/month and commute to NYU by train (45 minute ride).
Are any students in NYU actually doing this? How is it working out?

My sister commuted in from Queens (lived at home) while she was a dental student at NYU... When she was an underclassman she took the subway (1 hour ride + 15 minute walk), then my parents bought her a car for her upperclassman years.

She loved the school, but hated the commute. 😀

UBTom are u saying she drove in to NYU, I thought parking there was suicidal? If there's a way to drive there I'd be extremelly happy!

Commuting sucks. I live in brooklyn and commute for NYU undergrad- it's aweful. I mean the ride is about an hour, probably longer for Dental school, and might not seem that big of a deal but it is additive get's more and more annoying. So I wouldn't commute.

I got to run now but I'll add some more about commuter's live in a little while.

Hi,

Being a 3rd year student and also a native NYer I can totally relate to your question.

My parents live in Brooklyn and I also had an option of commuting from there, but it was about 1.5 hour commute each way.

The curriculum of dental schools is very demanding. First year courses start at 8am almost every day, so just put that in the back of your head if you will be taking the subway.

As for driving in, it is possible to drive in but parking around Gramercy (where the school is) is a nightmare. A lot of students that have cars just pay for a monthly spot at some of the local garages. I think it comes out to roughly $250/month. Compared to rent prices, that isn't bad.

If you still feel strongly about commuting, you may be able to pull it off first year, but 2nd year is a lot more demanding when you want to have as much time as possible to study, and you will wish that you had those hours you spent commuting to study.

Yep... That's what my sister did. Paid for a parking spot at the Waterside Apartments, which is just 2 long (east-west) blocks from NYUCD on the East River (FDR drive).

Still have to fight the traffic everyday though, on the LIE which sometimes is like the proverbial giant parking lot. 😛

Then again, she did use the commuting time productively during her junior and senior years-- You will see her patting on makeup in her car on the way to NYUCD to look nice for the patients. 😀

I commute from New Jersey, Essex county to be exact. I jump on the bus at Willowbrook Mall then grab two buses to school.

On a good day from the second I step out the door at home until I'm on campus, its about an hour. In the mornings the avg commute is an hour 10 min total and afternoon about an hour and a half.

I study on the bus to the city since its nice and quiet. But in the city...no way can I concentrate on the bus

$250 a month doesn't sound bad at all I think I might actually do that. Plus it gives me a great excuse to get that Acura CL I've been eyeing for a while

From Brooklyn I would think the J or Z train works since it drops you off on 14th and you can walk the 10 blocks (10 mins).

Technically NYUCD is in the Kips Bay area and as I recall there is a parking garage in the Kips Bay shopping area (2nd and 32nd). The further away you are from 5th ave the cheaper the rates get. Theres a garage in the NYU hospital which has a discount for students as I recall. You could always park in front of a hydrant and hope you don't get a ticket bc 5 tickets equals one month of garage rent though there is a police station on 2nd and 20th so they'll be around.

Bunch of my sister's classmates lived in the Waterside Apartments, which is 2 blocks away from NYUCD... REALLY nice view of the East River. I don't know how much the rent is though, but they did have to roomie-up.

I remember waiting in one of her classmate's apartments on the day of her NERBs exam (I was her Class-II amalgam patient. 😛 ) and it was pretty nice. Good security, neatly kept hallways, nice apartment with 2 bedrooms, one living room, kitchen and bath.

Any current NYU's student is living at Waterside Apartments ? And how much for the rent of 1 bedroom apt ?

Between 2-2500 for a 1 BR and 3000 for a 2 br, last I remember.
Best thing to do is look in the Village Voice for apts in the area or go to the management office in Waterside. I went to school next door to waterside and it was a very safe place.

Lots of my friends live out at waterside. For 1 bedroom on the 9th floor, they pay $1900. Obviously it goes up on the higher floors.

Go waterside if you want the most for your money. It's relatively cheaper and "closer" to school. But, I'm glad I didn't move there. Waterside community is an older community that is segregated from the city. It's in the middle of nowhere. It's close to a 20 minute walk to the nearest subway (6 train on 28th street). They do have a bus that picks you up (M16) but that's about it. That whole area around NYU is so depressing. I had to get out of that area. I love my building (31st/3rd). Rent is a definitely higher, but it's well worth it. Beautiful people around here...lol.

IMO, your NY experience is greatly influenced by where you live. Last year, I lived at 26th st., hated NY and wanted to go back to Chicago every weekend. This year, living off 3rd ave, I love walking home to/from school. I'm in a young area and it's close to school.....and yes, I'm starting to enjoy NY now...

Well, New Yorkers (and prospective New Yorkers, heh heh), if anything, are diverse..

I've been a New Yorker all my life, and that kind of living would suit me fine! A piece of tranquility in the middle of a busy city. I guess the best advice would be to look around and see what suits one's tastes.. Personal mileage will invariably vary! (invariably vary, I like that heh heh)

Personally, I say it doesn't really matter where you live while you are in dental school as long as it is convenient and doesn't impact your schoolwork... New York is such a huge place that if you want to really know the place, you will have to stay for a LOOOONG time anyway. More than 4 years. 😛

The rest of the world has this warped idea that New York City consists of only Manhattan. Nothing can be further from the truth!

31st and 3rd...is that by the 1-800 Flowers shop?

As a first year there and if you live at 26th street, you'll probably be getting your food from the cart guy on 26th and 1st (is he still there?). I agree with PiGuy in that where you live will influence your experience. If you go closer to 5th ave (3rd or Lexington) it's a lot more active with shops and restaurants (curry hill is right there). Plus you'll be by Baruch, which is a NYC public university so you can pick up a lot of hoochies if you want. (They dig the white coat 😉 )

the 26th street dorms are in a shady area and if I lived there, I would be depressed walking home too.
I definately think where you live influences how you feel about NYC. I love the city and love where I live. If I lived in the 26th street dorms, I don't think I would be as happy. It's not really the safest area in nyc for a girl to be walking alone at during night.
I thought about living at Waterside for a while, but I'm so glad I decided not to. Like Pi_guy said, it's in the middle of no where and again, the area is kind of shady.....it's not like the slums of harlem or anything, but it's also not park ave.
It is much cheaper though and if you have a roomate, you'll save a lot of money...

I used to live in Corona and my older sister went to med school at Sophie Davis up on 143rd and Amsterdam. THOSE NYC neighborhoods are shady-- pepper spray in your pocket is mandatory whenever you go out. 😛

26th Street or Waterside on the FDR are heaven compared to those places!

Hahaha...UBTom, I'll take your word on it. Don't mind us midwesterners...I'm sure the South side of Chicago doesn't even compare to some of the shady areas of NY...lol

Anyways, while we're on the NY subject, UBTom is absolutely right. You need to live here a loong time to fully appreciate this great city. I just went to Long Island today for the first time. Absolutely a different world out there. Incredible. I can't believe I got tanned and it's Sept. 21st.

Pasha: not sure if there is a 1800flower shop here. There are a couple of small flower places around here. Let me know the address b/c I may need to visit a flower shop soon...i'm in the doghouse...lol
