Hi,

I will be an out of state student attending the U of I this coming year. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on where to stay. I am hoping for somewhere closer to school as I am not planning on getting a car...maybe a bike?

Also, if anyone is looking for room mates.. please let me know.

Thanks!

I'm not going to IL, but I went to the info session on interview day... they said that all students can use their student ID to use the bus system for free, so you really don't need a car as long as you're living in Champaign/Urbana. Also, they handed out a list of places that have few or no complaints with the off-campus residence group and that allow pets... I'll dig through my stuff and see if I can find it. My tour guide said she lives in a co-op community that let her have her two St. Bernards! She said about 3/4 of it is vet students, and they have a fenced in off-leash area for dogs. You pay a big deposit initially that you get back after you move out. I'll see if I can find the name....

HI Stealthdog,

Please let me know the list if you find it. I did not go for the information session as I am an international student.

Thanks very much!

Darn... I have searched my whole room, but don't see any of my stuff from IL. I hope someone else who attended the info session can help! Sorry!

Are you talking about the omega tau sigma house? It's in Tolono, IL. Really, this area is very fond of cooperatives, be they food or people.

I know that student housing does not help out much. A lot of the apartments in town are pet friendly. When I say town, I mean Champaign, Urbana, and Savoy. There are some affordable places just out of town as well. I'd try the News Gazette or the Daily Illini .

Hi Truth 74,

Thanks for the suggestions.

I am actually thinking of staying in university housing..either the orchard downs apartments or the graduate halls. Have you heard anything about them?

The place that you put a "really big deposit" is Winfield Village, in Savoy. I believe there is a bus system that goes from there to the vet school. And you can have pets, but I think they are trying to limit it to 2 now. The waitlist is often a year but you can call and put yourself on the waitlist now and hope for the best.... sometimes if you want a townhouse and not a 1 bedroom (if there are 2 of you) then those are available more often. You are putting down a down payment, essentially - it is a co-op. Then you pay a very low rent, and you get your down payment back when you "sell out" to another person. One of our clinicians lives there, too.

The university housing is generally not recommended because they don't allow pets. I don't know anyone that lives there.

You can live in on-campus apartments but since you are around undergrads a lot, it's noisy and not very clean. If you find some roommates, you can rent houses in the Urbana area.... those are generally pretty nice, and a lot of people bike. Go to Google Maps, look up Florida and Lincoln Ave., and then go north east of that intersection. That's where a lot of students live. You can generally search the rental agencies websites... just google "champaign urbana house rental".

peppermint - by any chance are you in Singapore?

Anyway, I hope that helps... there will be a message board up shortly that the current 1st year students post on to help the incoming class find housing, get books, etc.

Hi CoffeeCrazy,

Thanks for the suggestions.

The co-op sounds good. How far away is it from the vet school?
It's a bit hard trying to organize housing from so far away. Do you think it would be possible if I started looking for housing only in Aug when I arrive there? Would all the good housing be snapped up already?

Yup. I am from Singapore. How did you guess?

It's good that there will be a message board up. Didn't know about that. 🙂

Our assistant dean, Mary Kelm, was really excited about interviewing 2 people who were in Singapore over the phone. Congrats - this will be a big change from Singapore! My cousins used to live there. 🙂

Anyway, unless you really want your own place, you might be better off waiting until the message board is up. Last year there were quite a few people looking for roommates who already had places lined up. I think that if you wait until August, it will be hard to find a good place within biking/bus distance. (And you do want to live near a bus line, in case it's a snowy or really cold day and you don't want to bike!)

University Commons (www.ucurbana.com) and Town and Country apartments (www.tandcapartments.com) are two places where some people live... they are both on a bus line. I think they both have furnished apartments although they are more expensive. I'm not sure how far from campus they are... use mapquest to figure out distances. 🙂

Let me know if there is anything I can help with!

Haha.. I was really nervous for the interview esp since it was like over the phone and I couldn't see them. So, I felt that all pauses were awkward.

Mary is nice and patient though. I wrote to her umpteen times and she always replied my queries.

Ya. I will wait for the message board to be up before making a final decision on where to stay. Am excited that I will be going to vet school in illinois. Never been to the US before so it will be something new.

Thanks for the offer of the help!
