Just a quick question...

Looking at the AACPM residency profile pages and some of the residencies say things like "Housing: yes" or "annual housing allowance" (St. Vincent's Manhattan) or "Housing Stipend $1800 per resident" (Jewish Medical NYC).

What is exactly meant by this? Anyone at these programs or know someone specifically may be able to add some insight. I was just curious and didn't feel like it was as appropriate to ask the residencies directly. Thanks!

For annual housing allowance and housing stipends, these are extra money that a resident gets from the hospital to help offset the cost of housing in the local area. This is very common in areas (such as New York City), where the housing cost is very high. When my sister did her Anesthesiology residency in Manhattan, she got a monthly housing stipend of 1000 to help offset the housing cost. Some of the hospital in NYC also offer discounted housing at some of the buildings owned or subcontracted by the hospitals.
