Hi all,

Has anyone heard much about the Houston LBJ Transitional Year? I am planning to go for an interview but am getting behind on some other things (like taking step 2, finishing off research) and really would appreciate input on the hospital, the IM curriculum, work hours, atmosphere, or any other insider info. Please respond or message me directly. Thanks so much!!

-3 months of wards
-3 tracks: surgery, medicine, peds. Medicine is the most popular track
-great program-15 residents
-2-3 electives
-work in county hospital
-free parking

I live in houston and it sucks!!!! Boring, ghetto, and not safe.

So, Doc84- worth the interview? Thanks for the input.

Layla, where in Houston do you live- or do you have any favorite areas?

You will see a lot of pathology there. If you want to learn go to LBJ. It is not safest area in the Houston area but a lot of Level I trauma centers are not in the best area...seems like the pre med forgot you are going there for the best medical education that you can get not to have fun.

LBJ is *not* a Level I trauma center. Houston only has two Level I trauma centers: Memorial Hermann (affiliated with UT-Houston) and Ben Taub (affiliated with Baylor). Both are located in the Texas Medical Center, which is an awesome place to work and train. LBJ is not apart of the Texas Medical Center and located about 20-25 minutes away (perhaps in a more "ghetto" part of Houston -- but with any big city, you're going to get some crime).

only a few good places left here. although nothing like Detroit, Houston has lost a lot of its lustre except-

1. West U (lots of your attendings will live here or around here)

2. Med center- you can find a few places across from the Rice U Campus to rent. Pretty safe. also smattering of apts/condos around med center.
Great location for residents (and management is aware of this, hence $$)

3. Mid town- probably one of your best bets. Nice new condos. THE SPOT for young professional couples or singles with good incomes. Good place to catch a good guy with his own condo and a great job 😉. Downside is that it's not too far away from the downtown club scene in houston.

4. downtown: city-style. very nice new lofts. more mid-aged types with a couple years' worth of income to spare for a more $$$ pad close to night life/games.

5. Hermann Park: nice apts/lofts. $$$. close to med center (most bikable).

6. Pearland- about 20 mins from Downtown via freeway. Lots residents are buying single family-style homes there. More bang for your buck/can live very nicely. But traffic stinks if you're going to/getting off work at the same time as everyone else ie 7-8am and 5-6:30pm.

7. The Burbs- Katy, Sugarland, The woodlands. the usual. Safe, monotonous, family types, 30-45 away from the medical center.

Stay away from:
* SouthEast Houston:scared:
* South West Houston :scared:
* Pretty much anything outside of 1-7 above

#1 pick for me would be Hermann Park.

hey guys, just wondering if someone could tell me how on-time the day ran. i chose the PM session (11am-5pm) and have a flight out of IAH at 6:35pm. does anyone who's been to the PM session know if their 5pm end time is pretty dead-on or do most people end early?
