I'm applying for undergrad summer research programs at UT Houston, Rice (REU), Baylor College of Medicine (SMART), and MD Anderson Cancer Center. I'm not considering out-of-city and state programs for financial reasons. I'd love to hear from anyone who has any experience with the Houston programs, or knows anything about the difficulty levels of getting accepted.

I did one of those research programs in Houston this past summer. The TMC is the largest medical center in the world and is quite an impressive place to work in. Having a huge cluster of hospitals and research institutes in a single place creates an environment that is very conducive for high-quality biomedical research. Summer programs in general are very competitive because you have hundreds of applications and no interview process, so it's hard to distinguish yourself from the rest of the crowd. Make sure that your essays aren't generic, your LORs are solid and can attest to how much you can benefit from such programs, and submit early since some programs are rolling. Feel free to message me if you had any other specific questions!
