I am not opposed to living in just about any part of the country except for the non-Chicago midwest. (Sorry, midwesterners!) With that said, my premed advisor has recommended that I add in 3-5 reach schools, since my list is heavy on the mid-tier and lower-tier schools, and hey, why not? I have been thinking about which schools I would love to go to and have come up so far with Yale and UCSF, mainly because I have some weak connections to these schools... for Yale, I have an LOR from a research supervisor who was a big shot at YSM for many years before relocating to Harvard, where I worked for him. For UCSF, I know two members of the faculty on a personal basis, and perhaps they will put in a good word for me.

I am looking for 3 other "hey, why not?" schools to add to my list. Any suggestions? Below find my list of already decided-on schools. I am not really a resident of any state for med school purposes but am trying to re-establish NY residency.

Thanks!

Apply to Hopkins...I ended up with a bad mcat (no, really...not "bad" by SDN standards, but pretty bad in general), but I decided to go ahead and apply to Hopkins. I got an interview! So, it never hurts to try.

Good luck.

hey why not U of chicago, Northwestern, Columbia, Hopkins...you know, the usuals.

Baylor College of Medicine!

Thanks for the sweeeeet suggestions. Those are all dream schools 😍 except for maybe Hopkins- I am not sure I would thrive in an atmosphere with such smarties such as Hopkins, HMS, etc... the top-top-top people would just intimidate the ****nuts out of me. I know that every med school has top-top-top people, but you know what I mean... the two H-bombs sort of thrive on being the best and I don't think I would like that sort of environment. I am more into Yale's system, collaborative learning, etc. Perhaps Weill should make it onto my "when pigs fly out of my buttocks, maybe I will get an interview, but it's only $35 and hey, why not?" list. 😀 Keep the suggestions coming! I am thinking of adding Keck, too...

My "hey...why not" schools are dartmouth (i wanted to say I applied to an Ivy and out of all of em, this seemed like the most on-track with what I want to do) and hopkins (cause....it's hopkins)

hey why not Vanderbilt? take a look at it!

So when I go into my interview and the guy asks me why I applied there, I should say "Hey why not?" 👍

You'd still be stunned that you got an interview at one of your "hey why not?" school smart guy...

Interviewer: So Medkit, why did you apply here?
You:...{I can't believe I'm sitting here}.....
Interviewer: Medkit....did you hear the question?

If Yale's system/approach interests you, then I'd definitely take a closer look at Northwestern, Cornell, UCSF, UCLA, and Duke -- all innovative in their own way. The 2 UC's may be difficult with out-of-state status, but you know, hey, why not?
