The reserves offer an excellent opportunity to begin living at a civilian attending's salary, then randomly have it cut in half to go on a deployment away from home.
I know of at least 2 people that were losing quite a bit of money being activated.
If you do go this way, make sure that your practice can handle you being gone 2 or more of every 5 years (that limit doesn't have any teeth any more).
Also make sure you keep an eye on what your salary would be if you were activated, and keep enough money in reserve to live comfortably at whatever level you have become accustomed to with only what your active duty pay would be.
