How does 'Retention Bonus' work in the reserves?

Sorry - likely a very stupid question here ... but anyone here who can explain how the 'retention bonus' actually works in the Reserves (AFR specifically)? So you join - get the Accession Bonus for x amount of years as specified in your contract and once that 'runs out' how do you actually 'move over' to the 'retention bonus' part? Thanks so much!
