I just did an interview with my undergrad's premed committee for a letter of rec. They brought up my extra curriculars:

1) I was my university's pre-med club president for 2 years (still currently prez).

2)been a certified emt-b for alittle over a year (and volunteering too)

3) im in the process of lobbying to get a campus run EMS system up and running. (more or less. just first responders capabilities)... not sure if this will pan out before i graduate but still i am working on this project.

4) I work, about 10-20 hours a week outside of school too to pay for my education and expenses.

With that said, i'd like your opinion. I felt like my committee pooped on me because i didnt do anything else... they said i relied on being an EMT too much, and I should have shadowed a Dr...
I was wondering if you guys could lend an opinion... should i really feel this bad? are my EC's okay? what do you think med schools will say?

(on that note, I also now plan to make every conceivable attempt to shadow a physician before i do interviews... while it may not be on paper, i will atleast be able to talk to adcoms about it.)

shadowing a dr is definately beneficial and if you can find the tme id recommend it.. if the dr. gives youadded responsibilities like mine has it gets even better

you gotta a nice set of ECs
you've shown leadership through being a pre-med club president,
your EMT-B....

You still have plenty of time to shadow, you can start now, its a really simple process, find a doctor near by (or your family doctor who will know you personally and will be more than happy to help ~ mine was), ask to spend a few hrs every saturday or sunday of every week for the next couple months and there goes your shadowing 🙂

IF YOU WANT (totally optional because you have a pretty busy life it seems, school and part-time job can really take someone's availabilities) you can go do a few hrs a week for habitate for humanity....

glad to see someone thinks my EC's are decent lol.
Habitat for Humanity is actually something that seems interesting... Not sure if I have a local chapter up where I live though. I'll look into it.

I actually think your ECs are good. I think once committees see what you have done and you worked in addition to school it will compensate. I think its not the quantity of ECs but the quality and I think having that EMT work really helps. That being said I agree with what someone else previously mentioned....go shadow a doc. Even if its for a couple of days or couple of months. I think its good to show that you know what you are getting yourself into and you dont just have an idea of what a doctor does in your mind but to some degree you have experienced it (at least for a couple of hours a day). That would be a good experience. 🙂 Hey gd luck!

Who are you trying to imress; this forum or your pre-med comittee? They are the ones that count as they will be writing your eval. Doesn't matter what the members of this forum think as they will not offer any input on your eval. If they want more then give them more than the EMT so you will get a good LOR not cry because you think your experience is great and they don't.

I think they're concerned that you may lack clinical experience. Do you get much as an EMT-basic?
