Hey so I'm a reapplicant.

My cGPA: 3.95
My sGPA: 3.93

1st MCAT from 2011: 22 (PS 7----VR 6-----BS 9)
2nd MCAT from 2012: 27 (PS 10----VR 6----BS 11)

I feel like I made great improvement in the sciences, but damn I just suck at verbal lol. I studied verbal the most and got 9's on my practice tests. Anyway, if anyone can give feedback that'd be great.

I also shadowed some residents and they said MCAT is important and so is research and state residency (which sucks because as an NH resident there's no option for me (and Dartmouth is obviously out of question)). I've done some undergrad research with Alzheimer's disease and also clinical research.

I am in a bunch of honor societies, got an award for my academic achievement, worked with Red Cross and Boys & Girls club, shadowed, volunteered at hospitals, etc.
I have also worked part-time as a tutor, and even a clothing store.

I won't reapply until next summer, but was wondering what I should do now. I am currently getting my MS in Biology though.

Constructive criticism is appreciated, but I can also tell when people are purposefully trying to be mean...so be nice 🙂 !

Thanks!

If you're thinking of applying for MD for this current cycle, I would advise against it. The stats are a bit on the low side, but what's holding you back right now is how late in the cycle it is.

If this is regarding the next cycle, I think you should consider re-taking the MCAT. If you're like me, and refuse to take it for a third time, then I'd suggest giving MD a shot but really focusing on DO. That means apply super early! Streamline everything and get your letters uploaded on interfolio (you'll need to buy a subscription anyways since DO schools don't have a free letter service, plus you'll save so much time and effort with that site).

Keep in mind that If you choose to apply to both, DO should still be a focus here. Don't take too much time focusing on MD apps. This means don't apply to 20 MD schools unless you're prepared to do 20 secondaries, and take that time away from doing your DO school secondaries! You can apply to a boat load of schools all around, but you'll just have to be extra fast in churning out those secondaries.

Hope that helps! I think you've got a great shot at DO and that it's worth giving MD a try. This of course is all based on your current MCAT. If you get a 30, then the game changes, and you'd definitely have a good shot at MD!

Well my main thing is that I want to do surgery. Can I still be a surgeon as a DO?

As a DO, you'd be able to match to all the same residencies as an MD, surgery included.

Ironically I had MCAT: 1st(7ps, 6vr, 8bs) 2nd(9ps, 6vr, 11bs) I also hated the verbal and I also got 8-10 in VR on ptest but ended with the dismal 6 AGAIN. Anyway, MD is a longshot but I had great succes so far with DO. I applied this cycle with my 26Q and have gotten 7 interviews and 2 acceptances thus far. I had similiar EC's but had a crapton of clincial exp from working in the hospital for the last three years. Hope it helps,
Good luck!

You might have had a chance at some low MD schools if you applied early (oct is pretty late for anyone), but a high GPA + low MCAT is a red flag for most institutions.

I guess DO school is a good route to consider. Also, smaller, less competitive medical schools will at least give you an interview. Although a 27 is on the lower side, it's not a disqualifying score. What many med schools do is add your GPA and Mcat, so your GPA may help you a little.
