  1. Pharmacy Student
Hi guys, please give me opinions on my gpa and plan:

year: 3rd year at a UC
cumulative gpa: 3.407 (hopefully raise it to 3.5 at end of 3rd year)
science gpa: 3.1 (hopefully raise as well)

I want to apply at the end of my 3rd year (summer of 2011). That means I will matriculate (if accepted) during fall 2012 correct?

I will have a letter of rec from a pharmacist and hopefully one from a podiatrist.
Another question, for Temple I can apply with only GRE scores correct?

Thank you so much!

you have a very good GPA , you need to get more rec letters , and how come you have a rec letter from a pharmacist? were you a prepharm. student? temple will accept the GRE but why dont you wana take the MCAT ?

GPAs are good. You will need a letter from a podiatrist though as well as shadowing experience.

^thank you. The reason I have a letter of rec from a pharmacist is b/c for a while I couldn't find a podiatrist to volunteer / shadow for. So I just took a hospital volunteering position and I thought it'd be good to volunteer in the pharmacy- smaller environmentand the pharm tech and pharmacist could get to know me well. Also not taking mcat b/c I won't finish 1 or 2 prereqs by time I apply so I won't be ready for it.

Do u guys think a lor from a pharmacist is not good? And just making sure, for temple I only need 2 lor correct?

Thankyou

You can have a LOR from a pharmacist, but unless I'm mistaken, all of the schools require a LOR from a podiatrist showing that you have had shadowing experience and that they think you would make a great podiatrist. I had LORS from 2 PhD professors, a DO doctor, 2 MS professors, and a DPM. So you can have that LOR from a pharmacist, but just make sure you also get one from a DPM before you apply. Do a few google searches to find one in your area, that's what I did. Good luck and if you have any questions about the application process feel free to PM me, as I'm going through it right now.

^ haha no. UC = U of California :]

also, i just wanted to make sure that math isn't calculated in the science gpa right?

GPA is good. Need pod LOR, 2 science LOR or at least a pre-med comm LOR. I have no idea what type of GRE scores get people into pod school considering I only thought mcat and dat were the only accepted tests. You would assume the average for most master programs in health sciences which ranges from 600-1000.

I am a 3rd year student as well hoping to apply this summer. I am curious about this whole process and have an almost identical GPA as Ayuka. I am already set to shadow a Podiatrist this winter as well as an orthopaedic surgeon. I already have shadowed a Neurologist and a neuro-physical therapist for a summer. Hopefully I will be granted a DIS research position in Florida State's Cardiovascular Research lab next semester. Will these other shadowing experiences make any difference in getting accepted into a podiatry school? How about medical research?
One last question for Ayuka is what made you single out Temple as the school for you? I can't decide which school I like the best.

hey Nole Chief Chad, I actually just prefer temple because I thought it's time for me to move out of California and be in a new environment. I like the cold as well as the city. Temple sounds like a great school as well.

So I recently have been able to contact a podiatrist who'll let me shadow.
1. How long should I shadow him for? and when should I bring up the topic of LOR's??
(I was thinking maybe twice a month for 3-4 months is that too much lol)
2. I took a lot of bio classes that weren't just intro biology classes so I was wondering as long as the class name starts with BIOL and is in the biology department, it should count towards science gpa?

thank you for everyone's help!

I would shadow him for as long as you can. The longer you are there, the better you will understand the profession and the more you will learn. More importantly, the longer you are there, the better the podiatrist will get to know and like you and will write you a much better letter.

I think the LOR is implied from the get go. He knows that you need a letter from shadowing and you can just bring it up at the end.

All of the BIO classes count towards your science GPA.

I just shadowed for 1 day for like 4 hours, but I'm a busy guy.

YEP. However classes like "survery of ..." can not be used to replace a required prerequisite.
