I've been thinking a lot about my chances of getting into dental school lately and have found that I really need to step it up this year. I am currently a junior and am a biology major. I know I have to participate in a lot of extracurricular activities this year because I really did not take it seriously my first 2 years. Does it look bad to have most of them in 1 year if I plan on applying next summer? Also, during freshman year I started to take physics and I am horrible at physics. I only had 15 hours and if I dropped it after the first test, I would have only had 11 hours and not have been a full-time student so I changed it to credit only (S/U). Because I was going to have to take the class over, I just did not do anything which was a horrible mistake. Now I have an U (unsatisfactory) on my transcript next to physics. I am retaking it this year and will probably make an A or B+. My overall and science gpa other than this is still good: 3.87/3.9. How bad will these two things look? Thank you for your help. I live in NC and hope to get into UNC or Maryland or something of the sort.

Take physics and do well. Otherwise you look fine. And do well on the DAT. Only beginning of your junior year and already stressing, you have a long application process ahead of you

:laugh:...Even if you slack off from now and drop down by 0.1 and do decent on DAT, you will get into a dental school.

Hey I'm in the same situation I did the same thing except I got 3 U's in Engineering classes because I hated them and switched majors. Did they factor the U into your gpa and did you get into dental school? If so did they bring up the U at the interview?

Even though pass/fail grades may not affect your GPA at your school, a failing grade of any kind (including fail for courses taken pass/fail) will be factored into your GPA in AADSAS. If you had passed the course, that would not be factored in. Now you need to take into consideration that the GPA your school calculated for you may be higher than what your AADSAS GPA would be, depending on your school's policy for how a fail for a pass/fail course affects your GPA. AADSAS factors in all attempts for a course that was repeated and not just your best or most recent attempt.

Overall, you definitely are not in an unrecoverable position.

Do you work for AADSAS or something how do you know this?

🤣

Google: aadsas pass/fail. It's literally the first link.

Right I read that and it says Pass/Fail classes will not be factored into your gpa so the classes shouldn't factor into the gpa that AADSAS calculates.

Why did you revive 5 yr old posts if you knew the answer?

The instructions say "Note that grades of P or Credit are not used in computing a GPA" and "Grades and credit hours for all failed courses will be included in the ADEA AADSAS GPA, even if they are not included in the GPA calculations of the transcript–issuing institution". A grade of U is not a grade of P or Credit, thus it will be factored in, despite the course being pass/fail.

Besides, if you fail a pass/fail course, isn't it pretty obvious what the letter grade behind it is?

A grade of U is not an F its unsatisfactory, Unsatisfactory means you did not make above a C- it does not mean that you made an F so how could they just assume I failed the course..... when I put the grade into my coursework section of the AADSAS application the grade says U but AADSAS grade says "none".
