I'm a second year and I've gotten three A-s in my classes and I was wondering how those look to medical schools? I can't tell if an A- is bad or not -- on the one hand, it's still an "A" but then it brings down your GPA. It's just very frustrating, haha.

Thanks!

Trust me, it doesn't matter. Keep getting A's and focus your energy on other parts of your overall application.

Good luck.

an A- does not look bad. It looks good. If you averaged an A- (3.7) you would be fine.

The affect on your GPA depends on what you are shooting for. If you want a 3.9+, an A- is not good. Obviously. I don't really know what else to say.

Damage is already done. Have you considered DO or Caribbean?

I knew a pre-med who got an A- in a bio course. I ran into him the other day at the airport. He was shining shoes. Get the picture?

Interesting EC. I'd say med schools will look favorably on this.

Worry about getting the rest of your application on par with your GPA before you worry about A-'s.

I won't say you're screwed, but you should score AT LEAST 41 on the MCAT to make up for this. Maybe even 42.

Is everyone in this thread serious?

There's no way that OP is going to get accepted to a caribbean medical school if he has gotten an A-, let alone THREE A-'s. I'm sick of SDN's optimistic attitude.

But seriously OP, you need to choose a different career path. Clearly you didn't want to be a doctor if you have stooped to the level of getting less than 93% in multiple classes. Good luck with whatever other career you choose (that isn't related to medicine hopefully).

gg you're done. No one I know that's serious about pre-med has any A minuses on their record..

The second would be I got 102 points out of 104 total for my organic II class without "talking" to my professor. two days later had to withdraw myself because the school bully was flashing D card on my way to class. a little whimpy to withdraw, in retrospect, my reason to feel scared was all right. later on this person, who was in the same class with me, named "Zhong Ying" who claimed to be a nontrad, trapped someone else and disappeared from school.

Why would Zhong Ying even care about OP? He only has an A-...

LOL. What ever became of that kid..

Better start looking into DO/ janitor schools.

Hehehe, thanks guys. It's clear I need to start considering my other options. Maybe culinary school...

HAHA. I see what you did there.

But seriously OP, whats wrong with you? lol

I'm applying to a seven-year program this coming semester (Junior Honors at UF) and I just had a case of extreme pre-med jitters...

I'm not sorry for asking a dumb question because you guys all made me feel better. 😛

Good luck on the seven year, I am applying to one myself next year.

But one A- is not going to do anything to your chances. Make sure you have research experience, clinical and non clinical volunteering, shadowing experience, and finally some leadership (I don't think you have to be too big on leadership because you haven't been at your university too long.) Anyways my point is that the seven year program expects you to have everything a regular pre med would have, besides multiple leadership roles. That is one of the reasons seven year programs are harder to get into than applying to med school the traditional way. Also, make sure to know why it is that you want to do medicine in seven years instead of eight; that will almost definitely be asked in the interview.

op's screwed for medicine. op, choose another career path. we don't want you to die from a heart attack at a young age

I certainly wouldn't want my doctor to have three A--'s on his transcript. Maybe Antigua would take a chance with you, but I doubt that...
I've heard podiatry is a wonderful field.
The hardest part is getting your foot in the door.

A- in my school is given 3.7 for GPA. It is not scored as an A. I got a bunch of A-s. But, I ended up GPA close to 3.8. I even had a B+ for a music course which I took for fun. I would worry if I get B for orgo chem or bio or something like that. Otherwise, dont sweat too much.

I wouldn't want a doctor with a SINGLE A--.

A- is where I draw the line.

I doubt it. This premed already got an A-. It's all over for them. 🙁

Indeed. This guy was not on some parent-funded "Eat, Pray, Love" gap year to explore the world around him and find his passion. He was on a fast track to selling his body for $5 crack rocks.

Lol...assuming that the rest of your first clause was "...and in my other classes I've gotten straight A's", you are in fantastic shape. Even if you got straight A-'s with a few B's, you'd still be okay. You need only be truly concerned if your GPAs are below 3.5, and even then being close to that threshold can be fairly easily compensated for via MCAT and ECs.

Well yes, I've also gotten 3 B+s (calc 1, calc 2, physics 1 lab), but everything else is an A. I just didn't know what to think of getting the A-s.

But thanks! 🙂

So you're more worried about A- than your Bs?

So.. you're more worried about an A- than a B+?

B+ = you're smart but you partied too hard
A- = you're dumb and you studied far too much but came up short
A = a dime a dozen

hth.

Of course I'm more concerned about a B+ than an A-! I just didn't know what to make of an A-...it's an ambiguous grade as far as I'm concerned. Cut a girl some slack, yeesh.
