How bad is a W on your transcript? On the NYU pre med advising site says "If you withdraw from a class or take it Pass/Fail, a medical school will assign that grade the equivalent of a C- or lower.". Is this true? I am really scared because I had one W my freshman year and I dropped it because the class was not interesting to me.

W = F- basically.
Pass = D+
Fail = F-

Jking =). A W will not affect your gpa at all or affect you. That being as long as you don't have 10 W's over 4 years. Also P/F won't harm you at all because its not calculated into gpa and some classes are only P/F sometimes. That being said the exception to the rule is do not take a pre-req as P/F.

OH man. You killed your chances. It's Caribbeans for you.

A 'W' means nothing, unless you put it on a belt. Then, you can set everything to Wumbo. Actually, if it comes up during the interview, you can start bragging about how much you know about Wumbology (the study of Wumbo).

As long as you retake the class and get a grade (assuming it's that kind of W and not a P/F W) it really doesn't matter.

^hmm, I withdrew from my second semester (16 credits) of college and I only plan to retake the mandatory English class.

OP, can you post a link to where it says that on the NYU site?

My Ws didn't count against my AMCAS gpa. I have 7 Ws (granted 5 were from a medical withdrawal semester). I am worried about it affecting my chances, but I already have an MD interview so I'm hopeful. As long as it isn't a trend I think it should be fine.

even a school that made me talk about my one W (UC Davis) gave me an interview so I dont think they really care about one or two. There are exceptions like medical leave though

Either I'm digitally illiterate or this is a pre-med club.
Honestly at 3 colleges I know of in my state all their labs are P/F. At my university from what I understand for my major psych major labs are P/F. And finally there are people on this site who have a whole semester of W's and got in to US MD schools. It's epic bs.

A number of my classes for my Bioethics minor are P/F too. And most of my labs. I agree, it's BS.

If you get a D, it's time to re-consider your pre-med career choice; talk to your adviser.

Pass/Fail courses are also a no-go for pre-meds. If you withdraw from a class or take it Pass/Fail, a medical school will assign that grade the equivalent of a C- or lower.

Summer science courses are generally not recommended, especially at other, less reputable, colleges. Many med schools believe that summer science courses skip over a lot of material and that students do not have enough time to absorb the material. If, however, you take General Chemistry I in the spring semester, consider taking General Chemistry II during the summer at NYU because Organic Chemistry I is only offered during the fall semester
:laugh: these f'ing guys.

Don't believe any of it.
