Hello everyone, this is my first post on this forum. I'm a in my 2nd year, I took biology 1 for the first semester and I couldn't get into Chemistry. I got an A in it, then i took Biology 2 for my 2nd semester and goofed around, long story short I ended up dropping the class. For my 2nd year I transfered to a state university, I took biology 2 for the first semester and failed. I wont make any excuses for myself. I didn't work hard enough. I've realized my mistakes. I really want to turn things around for myself and really try hard. I've gave up a lot of my social life now and devote a lot of my free time towards school. I'm taking chemistry 1 and 2 in the summer to catch up, and then i'm taking Orgo and physics in my junior year. do you think i have any chances of getting in anywhere, even with a dropped biology 2 course, and a failed biology 2 course? you guys can be honest.

Show an upward trend with grades, take a full course-load, and do well on your DAT.

Relax. The sky isn't falling just yet.

Okay, what you need to do is retake biology and make an A. Show admissions you screwed up and that you are still capable of succeeding in ENTRY level classes. They MUST know this before they will consider most students. As far as the other classes go, study hard and make mostly A's and don't settle for too many B's. I think you still have a good shot, it's too early to tell yet.

Do well on the DAT and I think you have a good chance.

It is still early in the game. Just continue to work hard and pull up the GPA throughout the next few years.

Thanks for the advice so far guys.

I feel really discouraged lately, I lost my father a couple of months ago. I try to not let it get in the way of my school work though.

I just don't know what I'll do if I get rejected by all of the schools I apply to. What will happen? I mean theres not much I can do with a bachelors in biology lol

Just about everyone is an 18 year old goof off when they start college, don't worry! ADCOMS love to see upwards trends in grades. It lets them see that you've matured, and it can give you a launchpad at any interviews to let you show your dedication. Also, I don't get why people are always so afraid of W's, ADCOMS could really care less if you dropped one or two classes. I have 6 W's on my trascripts for various reasons (Third time's a charm for calc!), and I got two acceptances.

Here's something else you can do that I did. I got a D the first time I took Ochem, then I took it over again and got a better grade. I did well in Ochem on the DAT, and I was able to use that to say at any interview that brought it up that I did infact learn the material. You just need to do that with Bio now! But don't worry, you'll be fine if you keep at it. And maybe don't spend ALL of your free time studying. =)

Edit: Just saw your updated post. There is a section on the Application that asks if you had any hardship that adversely affected your grades. My mother was diagnosed with with Leukemia the first week of that Ochem class, and I can honestly say it affected my academics, so I wrote that in. I was asked about that at one interview, and after discussing my situation, it gave them a better insight into what I was going through, and how that grade wasn't necessarily my true potential. Though, one should never lie about this kind of thing, I'm sure ADCOMS could see right through that, and it's incredibly morally wrong.

Keep on keeping on, and if you want to be a dentist badly enough, you'll get there sooner or later! Good luck!

Applying to dental school is mostly about grades that I can understand. However there is also the "what happens after you get in" that you want to think about. If you are are failing classes in college left and right now, chances are your condition isn't going improve after you get into dental school as it is just much more science and 20+ credit / semester quarter.

You should really try to work hard now, see if you can get decent grade. It not only proves to the adcom that you are a good applicant and with a heart to improve, but more importantly, lets yourself know if you'll end up not passing dental school and flunk out.

Not tryin to discourage you, but I have had too many friends to get into to health care schools and decide that its not for them. We don't want to see another poor soul to leave with a **** load of debt.

x2

just ace all your courses from this point on and crush the DAT

As long as your overall GPA you'll be fine 👍

Maybe 1 or 2 schools will hold it against you but in the overall most will forgive that if you show improvement and your scores in the end are excellent.

If you have to spend an extra year taking adv science courses then do it but I doubt it will come to that if you ace everything in the next 2 years.

This is the most inspiring bit of advice I have read; I have a couple Ws from early on and have worried about it. Thank you for posting.
