I just got my group for fourth year, and while most groups have five/six clerks before crips only have four. My last two extern months are January and February. How big of a disadvantage am I at compared to other people who have at least one more full month at a program?

You are at a disadvantage. The Jan and Feb months won't help you get a program.

But if are a good student (GPA/class rank) and do well during your 4 clerkship months you should be fine. Make them count.

Why wouldn't January count? I thought ranking is submitted in Feb.

As AB said, you'll be at somewhat of a disadvantage because of the timing of your externships. There are always exceptions (2 of the residents I worked with visited the program in January and March). I don't know that it's a huge disadvantage. I'd disagree with AB when he says January won't help. Feb might not be so beneficial in getting a program, but there is no reason your January program can't be your residency program.

See my comments above. I think January is a perfectly good month to extern. It even has some advantages, ie you're fresh in the residents/attendings minds when they are making their ranking list. Some think August, Sept, Oct are the best months, but time has a way of making busy residents and attendings forget how good a student was.

Would it be beneficial if I took Jan off and visited as many programs as I could before crips? Or should that be month of prepping for interviews? Or since I'm already short a month should I go to a program? I know it's a ways away for me (I'm c/o 2017), but we have to have our apps out in a few weeks so I'm trying to figure out the most beneficial situations for me to be in.

You don't have much time in January to do anything. For us it was boards a couple days after new years and then interviews a couple days later.

Take AB's advice. Make those 4 months count. It comes down to 4 programs vs. 1 program. Your odds are better with those 4.

You are at a disadvantage and I would be as creative and persistent as possible with this situation. I had a core program that took a high number of clerkship months, and called them to negotiate one less month so that I could add a month at another place, and luckily was able to convince my school to allow this change. I found the clerkship and residency selection process one of the most important and difficult processes of podiatry school. In particular learning about residency programs was the most difficult. Without visiting or doing a month at the program, it was hard to know much about them. Your selection of residency will have a huge impact on your training. My advice is to be as assertive for your needs as possible during this process, and one other tip is to visit the programs that you are interested in during the month or two immediately prior to crips. Show your face, show interest. I matched at a program where I didn't even extern, the way I did it was to visit it on the weekends the month or two before crips (I showed up at rounds ready to help), while I was at an externship at a program across town. By visiting when crips was fresh on their mind, I may have been more prominent in their minds than other students who had last seen them several months before.

Keep in mind that ranks for both you AND THE PROGRAMS are due on the same day in January.
