How big of an issue is it that a school is not accredited yet?

I'm going to Midwestern IL and the school is beautiful, and looks top of the line, I'm just worried that it's not accredited... What will that mean for me once I get my degree?

It means that you will be a dentist with a LOT of debt like most of us. I wouldn't worry about not getting a license. They have initial accredidation and have modeled their program (with some tweaks) after MWU-AZ, which is entering its 4th year now. I interviewed at both schools and their facilities, faculty, and Deans are awesome. Enjoy the bells and whistles now, because you will pay for them later...

So you decided MWU-IL over waiting a year for Baylor? You made it sound like Baylor was a sure thing.

You're not going with Baylor? Poor choice in my opinion.

def would have to agree. your spot at baylor is more or less guaranteed, so i think it's a bad mistake.

however, good luck to you in whatever school you choose

I'm definitelly applying to Baylor, but there are only sixteen spots, so untill I get it for sure, I'm mentally preparing for Midwestern. ^_^"

if you get into the Baylor program, you must tell us! good job in securing your acceptance too. at least you have a seat

I was told that initial accreditation means that the years it's valid for means that your students WILL get their degree, even if they lose accreditation aftewards.

MWU-IL has initial accreditation. The chance that they'll lose it are pretty much slim to none.

Isn't initial accreditation 8 years like any other accreditation + they check to see if they first graduating class is actually competent? I think the school will be fine.

Wow. Thanks guys, you all really put my mind at ease. I'll definitely keep you posted on the whole Baylor thing or if I hear back from the other Texas schools...

I thought it was accredited if a certain % can pass the board exams. So basically, once the first class graduates. But even still, as long as you graduate and you pass the boards, you'll be a licensed dentist.

I'd go to Baylor for the price tag... Don't worry about MWU-IL losing its accreditation... you have a higher chance of being hit by lightning than that happening lol

Depends on weather you are looking to specialize or not. If you are trying to specialize it's a bigger deal, than if you aren't!
