How can a Navy HSCP or HPSP student do a Army residency?

I heard that there were Navy HPSP students who enrolled at William Beaumont Army Hospital to do their general surgery residency via FTOS. Does anyone know the process for doing this?

Would this be post a Navy GME1 or straight after medschool. I know that in the Army that straight through is the norm.

Just curious. Thanx

I would seriously doubt there are any Navy residents at WBAH, unless there is someone with some sort of extrenuating circumstance(colocation can sometimes count). This is not the norm at all for the Navy and would not be considered FTOS (Full Time Out Service), but rather OFI (Other Federal Institution) which is a whole different ballgame.

It is sometimes possible to work your way into a program that is outside the "norm" but it is totally dependent on the "needs of the service." I have heard of some Navy GMO's stationed in Hawaii trying to pick up radiology slots at Tripler. Tripler was apparently more than happy to have them, but the Navy didn't need x+1 radiology residents so it was a no-go.

You are right! It is OFI. I am just wondering about the process to go OFI. I also heard WBAH takes civilians for residents. Would it be awkward to take a civilian deferment and enter WBAH in that pathway? Not that I would be doing this, but thinking how these Navy people are going about to do this.

FYI the civilians you speak of are only Internal Medicine VA residents and not surgery if i recall..

There have been no Navy Interns placed at an Army Hospital in the past few years.
