I need help choosing a field of medicine. So far I have liked all my 3rd year rotations. I'm thinking that OB is nice because it combines a bunch of things that I like. I'm finding this to be an extremely hard decision. Is anyone else stressed about this?? Thanks.
Ha, welcome to the half year before fourth year when everyone is scheduling or getting ready for 4th year. I think about half of my class have at least made the decision between surg and non surg specialties.
Of course you gotta go with what you really feel good with, but if you've liked everything, they say that EM is a good fit for many. My girlfriend is gonna match this year in EM, and she likes it because its a little of everything, at least the diagnostic part of everything. If you like the undifferentiated patient, and don't mind not being able to follow up with your patients, then EM might be for you.
This brings up the issue of choosing a specialty you haven't had a chance to rotate into. I've been spending my extra time thinking about and talking to people in fields like Dermatology, EM, Radiology, Pathology, and other specialties that are not generally part of the "core" rotations during third year, to rule those out, because if I end up liking any of those fields, I better get to know some people and maybe spend a little time in their clinic or at their office to find out what its like BEFORE 4th year starts, and hopefully before 4th year scheduling is over. Keep these in mind too. Good luck.
