how cold is overcoat weather

so cal guy here ... so kinda lost

how cold is it when people usually wear overcoats ... i have my yale interview on tuesday

40 and below?
45 and below?
50 and below??

totally no clue here ... please give me ur advice!

personally, i only wear overcoats if it's cold enough to snow. a suit-jacket should be fine until below 30's or 20's.

Take an overcoat as New Haven is not going to be sunny and warm. If you need it and don't have it, you look stupid. If you have it and don't need it, you look prepared. Take the overcoat.
 
kuhlguy, you are a slow learner. if you post "I have an interview in New England, do i need a coat?" you'll get helpful answers.

so why say "Yale" when you know it will piss people off? Pointless to your actual goal, which is to get clothing advice.

New Haven is dreary and cold, but you won't be outside that much, so you can probably skip the coat if you would rather not lug it around.

I don't think kuhlguy was fishing for compliments. MDRus, I think you should give him the benefit of the doubt. Anyway, I'm interviewing at YALE:biglove: next month and I'm planning to bring my overcoat. Oh did I mention the interview was at YALE?

I'm from southern Michigan, and I wear a jacket when it's in the 50s and below (but I'm almost always cold). as far as wearing an overcoat (ie a wool coat over a suit jacket that's already over a dress shirt), you should have one if it's in the 40s or below. if it's 50-60, you probably won't need one, especially since you won't be outside much. but for under 50, it'd be nice to at least have with you. especially since it's usually the wind and lack of sun that makes it feel colder than it actually is. check weather.com for the wind-chill (the "feels like" temp). anyway, you'll look very GQ carrying it around with you if you don't end up using it.

i'm a guy, and went to an interview location in the low 30's wearing only my suit and was fine. i'm also from CA, so i've got a low tolerance for temp extremes, so if i can handle it, so can you. just remind yourself of the fact that you're interviewing at yale, and that should get the blood flowing.

40 and lower if you can tolerate brisk weather. In any case, I don't think it matters. You'll be indoors the entire time.
 
I'm going to NYC for some interviews next week and its going to be highs in the high 40s and lows in the high 30s. My suit overcoat is more like a trenchcoat and isnt wool so I'm just going to take it in case, if I don't need it I'll put it aside when I get inside, but its also supposed to rain one day I'm there, and I'd hate to deal with that in just my suit.

Gotta be under 30 for overcoats. Then again when I was in IL for college, I never needed one, even when it was 17F.
 
I think you should bring it just in case you do get cold. You could always leave it in your car when you get to the interview if you feel like you won't need it.
 
I guess because pre-meds hold such a high affinity for tackling complex material it leads to making simple things complex. You wear the coat if its cold and don't if its warm.

I think it's a space thing. He's coming from Cali. Who wants to lug a winter coat around if you don't need it?
 
I'm from Rhode Island so i usually start wearing them when it starts to snow. But since you're used to warmer weather I'd wear one. As an earlier poster said, you might as well bring it and look prepared rather than not bring it and regret it.
 
I interviewed there in late October and needed a coat even then (and I'm from Iowa). I would definitely bring one.
 
i have to agree that the windchill is what gets you cold. it was in the 20's last night here and i was fine with a jacket. but today was pretty windy and in the upper 30's and i had the gloves, scarf, and the whole package. cant believe it's december just around the corner. 😱
 
Boston native here. If you mean a winter coat by "overcoat", I'd say anything below 40. Between 40 and about 49 I'd wear a jacket, and then once it hits 50 or so just long sleeves work.

It must be nice to NOT know when to wear a winter coat... It's been FREEZING in Boston, as usual.
 
haha ... yea ... i don't really know what cold is .. i like the cold (live next to the mountains so i take day trips up there) but havent lived in it ....

coldest it gets here is mid 50's in winter .... haha and that's COLD ... usually most of winter stays in the mid 60's to mid 70's ....

I grew up in South Dakota. What is an overcoat? That must be something people would wear if it ever got below about -30 F.

I repeat what I said above, take the overcoat. Nothing looks worse that someone standing around shivering. You can always joke about your acclimation to 60 degree winters but take the coat. It is easy to get chilled in New Haven and as someone else said, you can leave it in the car if you don't need it.
