How common is this? Male med students sexually aroused by female patients?

The other day, I heard 2 male medical students joking sexually about seeing some nude female patients, and how attractive she was, and other body features.

I am now deeply concerned. How common are perverted male med students? I don't want one of them to be my doctor "checking" me out while pretending to do a physical.

Youre going to find people attractive. End of story. Unless they innapropriately touching you why would you really care. Attractiveness is just like intelligence. You are born with it. You wouldnt get mad though if they had been talking about how smart she was.

I would be highly uncomfortable knowing that a young male physician doing an examination on me is thinking inside his head - "nice boobs" "should shave her split end"...etc.

Medical students are usually in their early 20s and have not had enough experience with attractive women to "be use to it."

Holding back the emotions is harder for some than others.
🙄 Give me a freakin' break.

Or it could be that they are uncomfortable with it and using humor/joking as a coping mechanism. It's inappropriate and probably moreso within ear shot of others, but they are human and make mistakes.

FWIW, there is nothing "attractive" about a GU exam.

If you are uncomfortable with it, deny med students access to your care and seek care from a female physician. Problem = solved.

Here's a novel idea: see a female GP.

:nono: I have seen a male MHT date one of his patients before.

When you're actually DOING the exam, there is so much going through your head, ("Have to check for this, do this, insert the speculum this way," etc.) it's hard to notice anything else.

That being said, for med students reading this....LEARN TO KEEP YOUR YAPS SHUT IN PUBLIC. 😡

We've had med students rotate through our office who thoughtlessly say stuff like this (or something equally controversial) in the hallways of our clinic, and have had patients write letters to our office manager complaining about them. Seriously, one of your only responsibilites as a med student is to know when to STFU.

I'm so glad I don't have dangly bits :meanie:

Don't worry. You don't seem that attractive anyway. *glances at avatar*

You are deeply concerned

If you have nice boobs and ANY male sees them, he is going to take note. You are the weirdo...

If he says it to your face though, might be problematic.

It is expected that you will be sexually attracted to some of your patients. The key is to behave in a professional manner at all times.

You can find some female doctor in Muslimland to do an examination on you then.

I'm a gay guy and I find your concerns hilarious. As long as they don't do anything inappropriate to you, they should be free to think what they want. When the thinking process is clouded by attraction, then it's a concern, but on the same token your doctor could be a serial killer, a racist, or a classist, or just hate your fat/ugly ass.

How are these things bad? You honestly can't say that you don't judge people. Again no one is raping you by thinking these things. If you don't ever want to be judged (females do judge other females) your going to have to see a non-human doctor so better start praying that we make contact with the aliens soon.

I agree. It's printed on the freaking elevators, ffs. People need to learn when and where to be appropriate.

Probably more true than most would admit. Simply put, this something you grow out of. Both seeing everyone this way and more importantly learning to keep your mouth shut.

Ask any mature attending, or nurse and they will confirm that after a while they all look the same.

Conversely, I can't tell you how many patients have described their caretakers -- nurses, docs, PA's, etc. -- in terms of their attractiveness. When will the objectification of health care personnel cease? 🙁

Trust me its not just the medical students. I have noticed this from pct, nurses and residents. Females also make comments about "male parts". Nothing new, humans are humans.

Trust me it won't happen to you, only attractive women 😉

lol, you think female med students are any different?

You go to the Caribbean - now why would that be? Not smart enough to do well on the MCAT? Too lazy/dumb to get a decent GPA? A social outcast that has no ECs?

I wouldn't talk if I were you. Especially when you are looking at a 200K debt without ever being a physician.

IDK... aliens are kinda kinky too, with only one thing on their minds....

Yeah, so if a creep looking doctor asks you to undress, you wouldn't heisitate - Riiiiight.

Don't be mad just because nobody agrees with you. I'm sorry that you regard all physicians with such reverence and expect them to abide by standards not consistent with human nature. This whole thread just makes you seem immature.

Did your mom ever teach you about the birds and the bees?

Yeahhh but majority of them wont look like creeps. They look like everyday people.

:lock:

In before lock. This thread had a glimmer of a chance at usefulness, but that was quickly dashed.

To the OP, the med students were obviously out of line. If they keep it up, they will probably be reported by the next person who overhears it. If they save it for an "appropriate" place, then hopefully no harm ever comes from it.

Re: men & boys. We're scum. 😳

OP, obviously what was said was inappropriate. However, the truth is that human beings naturally judge one another in at least some sense. I've definitely had attractive patients under my care. Do I treat them any differently? No. But does that mean I don't notice either? Of course not. That's like saying I don't notice that the 400-pound bariatric patient in front of me is...less than attractive. Of course I notice. You at least try to treat them all the same. (Admittedly, the halo effect is likely to play into how we treat the attractive woman and it is likely she will get more attention from the staff because people enjoy being around her more.)

That all said, when actually examining you, sexuality is the furthest thing from my mind. Further, there is NOTHING attractive about examining a woman's breasts or vag... especially when she is sick and everything down south is wrinkly or there is discharge.... Human beings in a hospital setting generally look pretty darn fugly naked -- both male AND female (and I am definitely a straight male).

Guess who else isn't a doctor?

An annoying, ugly pre-med who didn't make it into medical school.

Very true.

uhhh...?

and i do believe my vagina is not "fugly" when i go for my yearly gyn apt...... haha

but, this is all depending on what type of setting the OP was in when her fellow classmates we're making comments... so, you just may be right...

I can understand your reaction, but this doesn't seem to be an issue of perversion so much as unprofessional behavior. As part of the medical community, we are privileged to see and learn things about our patients, including their sexual practices, that are otherwise not accessible to anyone else. It's our responsibility to receive that information with the strictest of confidence and professionalism.

You will find you react to some patient along the way as well. Perhaps you'll find a gangrenous foot disgusting, or you'll look down on a patient's chronic cocaine abuse or recurrent STDs. Maybe you'll just be one of those med students who hates feet.

The point is that medical staff are still human. That's not the problem though. The problem is the reaction that follows such interactions. Think about the first time you saw a movie with your parents that had a sex/nude scene in it. The scene doesn't change just because your parents are in the room, but you'll probably be less likely to comment about it, compared to a friend or significant other.

Running to same sex care providers is somewhat short sighted. The problem isn't the gender, it's the experience. No male obstetrician attending with years of experience is really going to care, nor act like a tween. He's going to do his job and take your money.

I have a very strong feeling he is WAY more likely to be a doctor then you...

I thought all girls are chaste maidens of virtue. 🙂

You're right, at least 43% of the females in my class have started wearing chastity belts. That being said I'm not taking off my shirt any time soon for my classmates.

Haha... perhaps. I work in the ED. When I see "it" it's usually not looking its best. 😉

I think it depends upon the context. That said, I wouldn't want to be a gyn....

1) You probably wouldn't know it.

2) If you're not comfortable with a young, male physician examining you, ask for someone else. You do have a right to do that.

That said, the med students in question were out of line. However, they are just human. When I last worked in a hospital, I'd run across some very nice looking young(er) men. Sometimes, I was able to hide the fact that I found them attractive. Other times I was embarrassed (and I blush pretty severely when I'm embarrassed).

Besides, when they're actually doing the exam, they're probably not thinking about you as a person much anyway. They're going through a mental checklist to make sure they don't miss anything.
