Of course they'll both be competetive at top programs, but overall how competetive is getting an Anesthesiology residency compared to General Surgery (categorical)?

is there a reason you want to know this besides just stirring up trouble?

My gut feeling and from what I've heard is that GS is moving into the fairly competitive category. Nothing like the subspecialities like plastics, uro. But not as easy as it used to be pre-80 hours. For some reason people think it's more of a lifestyle field now.

As mentioned, Gas is tough at the top places but overall seems to be not as competitive. I have no info to back any of this up, just gut feeling and things I've been told.

WashU’s med student web site has some information about the competitiveness of different specialties. They state GS as "high" and anesthesia as "intermediate" (range: low - intermediate - high). I think they base this off the percentage of unmatched US seniors.

Other "high" competitiveness specialties list on the web site: Radiology, derm, plastics, rad onc, urology, neuro surg, optho, ortho, ENT, pathology 😕, and PM&R 😕.

Just one source's opinion...
