How competitive are EMT courses usually?

There was a pre-test for the EMT-B program I want to get into, which I thought was going to be pretty easy. Then 150 people showed up to test for 40 slots. I was blown away, popped-collar wannabe firefighters as far as the eye can see. Now I'll probably have to try again winter quarter to get in. This is the only program that is remotely close to my college.

Is this normal?

WHOA!!!!! thats not normal, although lots of ppl sign up for summer courses. If you're there early, you usually get it.

Yeah, it sucks having the best EMS in the country.

There was an application to get into the class when I took. Didn't have any problem getting in though. If you're anywhere past your first year of college, shouldn't have much competition for a spot IMO...
