Hey guys...I was just trying to get a feel of how competitive Ophthalmology really is to match into...if I don't have AOA or research in Ophthalmology, what sort of board scores would I need to match anywhere (when I say no AOA, I mean average grades in first 2 years followed by good grades 3rd year)?

What about if I have my name on a paper in some other field? Will that help at all?

Thanks for any input! 🙂

welcome to the forum. why don't you take a few moments and scroll through this thread: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=66427. Pay particular attention to the avergae USMLE scores for accepted applicants during the past 3 years. what you are not telling us is your experience in ophtho. you are going to need a strong LOR from someone in ophthalmology. if you feel that you can get this letter and your scores are near average or above for those who successfully match into an ophthalmology residency and you feel that you can receive strong letters of rec from your core clerkships and you apply early and to a broad range of prgrams (i.e., not limiting yourself to a particular geopgraphic location) then you have statistics on your side in that you probably can match into an ophthalmology residency.

being aoa can only help you. not being aoa will not jurt you provided you meet the above criteria.

published research in any field can only help your cause, not hurt it.
