How did you choose which MSTP to attend?

Anyone know of any good programs NOT urban and preferably northern?
Iowa & Mayo are two. Many others around depending on your definition of urban...

UMich, UW-Madison also

Madison metro is well over 500,000, so not that small for the Midwest. How about Penn State, Dartmouth? It might help to know what parts of "NOT urban and preferably northern" the OP considers desirable. If it's cheap living with skiing, for example, Utah might be good despite being in a large city.

Is that serious, or is my joke meter broken? The Hopkins hospital is in the eastern parts of Baltimore, in a pretty grimy area. It is a very urban place. And depending on who you ask, Maryland isn't even "northern", so...

URochester, UMich, Wisconsin-Madison are in small cities (>100k people), so I'm not sure if that's what the guy had in mind. Honestly though, the best hospitals are in urban areas, so I'm not sure if there's any use in avoiding them.

Consider Stony Brook MSTP, I can safely say that it and its affiliates (Cold Spring Harbor and Brookhaven national lab) are in the middle of nowhere. UMass MSTP is in a small city (Worcester) too, I think. As for non-MSTPs, maybe Penn state like the others said, and RWJ-Princeton.

That's a difficult one. There are plenty of non-MSTP MD/PhD programs like that, but thus don't offer simultaneous stipend and tuition waivers throughout. Off the top of my head, look into Penn State. I haven't double checked that they offer MSTP benefits; but it's a good program that lies way outside of the urban sprawl of Philly and Pitt. It's got a small town feel because it's a small Uni city in the middle of rural PA outside Hershey. Only one that comes to mind for what you're seeking. GL

Edit: FYI, didn't see other replies until after I sent mine. Great answers. 👍

Penn State does give tuition wavers, a $23,000 stipend, and health insurance. It's a nice program; I was accepted this year but chose to withdraw. Honestly, the part I liked least about it was the small town feel. Hershey is tiny, so maybe it is what you're looking for.
