Did you guys just work with a professor and help him out in the lab?

or

Did you apply for a grant and start your own research?

The latter is kind of weird to me and I don't get how some people do it. Does all research have to be unique? Like when people make posters, etc.. how do they get stuff published… and how are undergrads really that innovative to be having unique research that bring new awareness to the science community?

Usually a topic is thought up by a supervisor, and the pre-med student carries out the technical duties. They might make minor contributions or suggestions to the research. If research gets put on a poster or published, it will most likely be the supervisor that gives the OK for that to happen. I don't know about applying to grants, but I imagine most pre-meds don't write those either.

Do a quick search for research on forums. Hopefully you'll find some great older threads that can help you. 🙂
