How did you guys take the MCAT or GRE without having an id (undocument)

"Can undocumented students take the MCAT?

Yes! For those who are unfamiliar with the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), it is an exam that all prospective medical school applicants must take. The exam tests you on a variety of science subjects as well as verbal reasoning. For more information visit: https://www.aamc.org/students/applying/mcat/
When registering for the MCAT you are eligible to be assigned a free placeholder social security number (SSN) to use for registration purposes. You can call the AAMC, who administers the MCAT (Phone: xxx-xxx-xxxx), and let them know you don’t possess a SSN, and they will assign you an identification number (you don’t need to reveal your status). This assigned identification number is also used with your AMCAS application (generic application to apply to medical school) for purposes of your identification."

I wanna hear more.

As was noted, you most certainly can register for the MCAT. However, you will need a government issued ID to take the test. The ID doesn't have to be U.S. issued, but it must be unexpired.

Just any ID that will have your name, date of birth and will be in English language.

My concern here is that I hope you are planning to legalize your stay in US, otherwise even tho you will get into medical school (and I hope you will), you will not be granted your diploma. Simply you will attend med school but wont become a doctor upon graduation.

I went thru the process of immigration myself, and before I legalized my stay in US i check out some schools and their policy on that. Some schools will require you to pay the 4 year admission up front!! some wont admit you.

Good lcuk!!

Some states now have a process for obtaining a 'not federally compliant' driver's license or ID card. That might be your best bet. Alternately, many student ID cards have a DOB and expiration date. You could refer to AAMC ID rules to see if that would work.

This is not the case. Undocumented students are conferred the degree they have earned. A diploma is not dependent on visa status or lack thereof. The impediment to licensure for undocumented medical students is a work permit that is required for internship and residency.

Not to be a dick, but what is the point? What medical school will take you being undocumented? You would be considered an international student with no visa making it already extremely difficult to achieve admission, and on top of that you are here illegally....? Not sure if that combo is going to fly. Furthermore, looking at their own future, even if they wanted to train you, you will not being able to get a DEA number, a state medical license, malpractice insurance, or hospital credentialing being undocumented....

Again, not trying to be mean about it, rather just realistic.

edit: just read gyngyn's post above. I still find it hard to believe you will be accepted, but they sit on an adcom so I'll defer to his higher experience level with these matters.

This might be an option.

If OP meets these requirements
"In order to obtain DACA-status, DREAMers must meet certain criteria including that they were brought to the United States before the age of sixteen but are not older than thirty-one years of age, have achieved particular levels of education or military service, and not have been convicted of a felony or have a problematic record of misdemeanors (For a full list of criteria, click here)

Students who are granted DACA status are issued an Employment Authorization Document (also known as a work permit) and can apply for a Social Security number from the Social Security Administration."

Then you might be onto something.
Not sure if medical schools consider you international or not. If they do, US MD remains a long shot.

Good luck, wish you the best. It's a long challenging road undocumented or not.

Also, the criteria for DACA might be expanded at the end of the summer with an executive order.

Ah yes, you definitely deserve to get into a US MD/DO school. Coming here illegally, like so many others is completely ok! Instead of going through the proper channels. you just snuck over and started to take advantage of everything that America had to offer, like the education system in which you are currently enrolled. Only in America can you come here illegally, breaking some laws in the process, and then continue on to lead a successful life with no repercussions. Yeah you might've been a kid and not understood why you were brought over, but your parents broke the law while doing so, and you all still became criminals. And now that you're older, you're probably going to have kids of your own, and because of outdated laws, they're going to automatically be citizens! Then, even if the government finally beings the process of long overdue deporting you, they won't once they find out that you have kids who are American citizens and won't want to separate this family. Keep on doing what you're doing and thanks for all you do!

Why do I get the feeling that poster above me made the account name "throwaway" because it's a throwaway account and he doesn't want to post that comment on his real account. If that's how you actually feel, at least be man enough to post it on your own account and take accountability for your opinions right or wrong.

How do you plan on paying for medschool? Pretty sure you'd have to be a legal resident in order to qualify for loans... Just a thought. I really hope everything will work out for you! Best of luck!

Woooooowww tell us how you really feel! I hope you're not already a doctor/ plan on being one with that mentality.

I believe some states give undocumented students loan options. I'm not really sure how it would work for med students. Although I believe the link I posted above goes into some detail.

I'm undocumented and was wondering how some undocumented people were able to take the MCAT or GRE without an ID? I only have my college/university id

This guy is really famous and got into med school while being undocumented so I'm sure it's possible. Big inspiration.

I know this is a very controversial issue (especially now with all of the crossings and bus stops on the news) but I love Dr. Q and could never hold that against him.

Well I don't mean to derail the tangent, but back to the thread. OP, is it possible for you to get a passport or something from your embassy? Depending on your nationality, you may have other options (eg matricula).

I know this is a very controversial issue (especially now with all of the crossings and bus stops on the news) but I love Dr. Q and could never hold that against him.

There should not be anything controversial about this subject. The laws are there to run the country. And we have to keep our rules/laws fair, consistent, and transparent to every citizen and legal resident of this country. I have nothing against Dr. Q's credentials or accomplishment. But breaking laws/rules are not fair to everyone. Rules are rules and should be applied to everyone including the President of the United States. When you broke a rule/law, it is only fair that you have to face a penalty or negative consequence and not a reward. We have to stop giving incentives or rewards for the wrong things or people who do the wrong things !!

There's no reward yet really, the person still has to take the exam and have great credentials. Also, s/he won't be viewed the same as a US Citizen and will probably be considered as an international applicant (which have higher standards and not many schools accept international applicants) if they are considered at all so idk what penalties he deserves. Also, OP will have a hard time finding funding since he can't get loans from the US government and private loans are nil impossible without a cosigner. Truthfully, OP should look into becoming a permanent resident or something along those lines before applying to medical school. I hope they are asking this question because they are taking the steps necessary to be a legal resident.

Hi,

that is exactly what I thought myself. That you will get the degree but simply wont be able to work since you dont have work permit. However, when I contacted Cornell medical with that issue ( i used to be undocumented myself, but since then I became a US resident) they told me that if I were to be accepted to their school I would need to legalize my stay before earning the degree. On top of that I would need to pay for the 4 year of education upfront - good luck with finding 250K in my pocket - it ain't there.

Thats what their office told me. But I would assume each school oparates differently.

Another issue with that would be that there is a law that US schools cant discriminate, and not admittiing someone to school bc of their legal status is simply a discrimination.

Anyway good luck to OP!!

the fact that that person can stay in this country illegally and go to the test center to take the exam then apply to schools and do all the stuffs that you've just described is already us rewarding this person for breaking immigration laws, much less letting him to "look into becooming a permanent resident".

I would be ok with him if he stayed in his original country and take whatever tests then apply to schools then find the funding after getting accepted, the obtain the proper paper to go to enter the US for school, etc like any other international students from any other country. If you yourself went to Mexico for example without proper documentation, I wanna see if you could stay there and go to high school/college with federal aids then take exams then apply to graduate schools there. You would probably have to live in hiding or be put in jail almost instantly then deported if discovered, let alone talking about obtaining a simple freaking ID or whatever.

This whole thing is just wrong and should be corrected with our votes immediately !! Illegal is illegal and should be punished to the full extent of the law !! I am sick of seeing those illegal acting like they are owning this country !!

He was likely brought here as an infant. This is his original country.

if you are illegal, you are a criminal in this country and should be jailed and deported !!

This is disgusting and I'm a bit disheartened that people like you exist in the health care fields.

He was likely brought here as an infant. This is his original country.

you go to Mexico for example and cry that to the Mexican authority and see if they listen to all that bulls***. If his parents brought him to this country, it is his parents to have to take responsibility for him and not this country and its citizens.

I am also sick to see people like you who tolerate this **** Next time you got cut in traffic or at the movie by some punks, please do not feel bad.

I can't spell that word here for decency. But I am more than happy to pronounce that word for you out loud if I had a chance to see you face to face.

My "ultra-liberal" input:

First, no human being is illegal, the correct term is "undocumented."
Second, many of the immigrants who are here undocumented escaped deathly situations. As a future physician serving humanity, I would hope you realize how one-sided your view on this is. You will meet people from everywhere, will you not treat them because in your eyes there are only humans with papers and subhumans without?
Third, they are not stealing our jobs, in fact, they fill in the gaps in sectors of mostly low-end jobs and they even pay taxes. However, they cannot vote, a power people like you want to use to "correct" this "injustice."

Remember that immigrants started this country...

That's true. How would you respond to those who say that a path to citizenship would encourage even more people to come here? In other words, where do you draw the line? Would you let anyone who wants to come to the US to come (there could be about 2 billion people who want to)?

As echoed above, if he was brought here as a child, this is the only country he really knows. I agree that laws need to be followed, but it doesn't need to be a black/white decision every time. Show some empathy.

Not going to give my personal opinion here one way or the other because it's turning into a flame war quick and it's a complex, multifaceted, issue. But just for clarification, it's not discrimination. People are not admitted to medical schools for a plethora of different reasons, are you saying it is discrimination that people were rejected for having a serious IA (institutional action) like cheating, or sale of drugs? If you agree that, that is not discrimination because those students broke the law, then you must also agree that medical schools have the right not deny admission to people who are not here via legal means (read illegally). If they can in fact get a work permit then they are no longer here illegally, and it becomes a different issue of tough competition and difficulty in international admissions to US MD.

Either way, it's not discrimination. It about meeting certain standards-- academic, legal or otherwise.

I am scratching my head here as I am struggling to figure out where the effing you got that hint of racism from that post. Makes me seriously doubt your comprehension ability. I don't think that would be going to work well with the MCAT 🙂

i smell troll, or a miffed international student.

reading all those posts of the "liberal" people above reminds me the time when I was young, dumb, and irresponsible.

in general, it is so easy to afford to be "liberal", "compassionate", "humane", "empathy", etc when you are not responsible for anyone else but only yourself (or even not responsible for yourself, i.e. someone else like your parents is supporting your lifestyle without you sweating a drop of sweat). Ask yourself how much you have contributed to this country, e.g. how much you are really paying in tax ?? Are you paying the full cost (tuition and living expenses) for your own schooling without someone else's support/subsidy like parents', spouses', families', taxpayers', etc ?? Are you paying or responsible for any someone else beyond yourself ?? Are you taking more for yourself than contributing to this society or your own family ?? Are you even owning a home/house ??

you do not need to answer me. Just ask yourself those question and be honestly answer them for yourself.

when you are growing older and wiser and becoming more responsible, you will be becoming more "conservative". That is for good reasons. You will understand will you get there.

regarding this matter, I am a law-abiding and responsible citizen of this country so yes I am offended to see things like this happening everyday here in America.

But let me give you this scenario to put you all in perspective. Let's take a minute and do this exercise. Close your eyes and imagine the United States of America is a HOUSE.

Imagine that I, a total stranger, am entering/breaking in that house WITHOUT the house owner's permission. After that, I stay in that house, eat the house owner's food, flirt with his wife/gf, go to schools and visit doctors/pay hospital bills with house owner's money, build a family and have children and make the house owner support all that responsibility, and even declare that house mine. I also demand the house owner and his family to speak my native language, sing my original country national anthem, follow/practice my religion and celebrate my holidays, and raise my country flag, etc. Every freaking time the house owner tries to kick me out of his house for violating his own home/properties and rights, I am crying "racism"/"xenophobia" to try to make the house owner feel guilty for trying to kick me out...

Now imagine that that house is YOUR own freaking house and open your eyes...

Yes, and the liberals call it racism when we want to protect our borders. The US is apparently the only country in the world which cannot secure its borders. Countries like Pakistan have 30 foot tall electric fences surrounding their borders. All we are trying to accomplish is to stop illegal immigrants from destroying our country. However, Obama and the liberals know those illegal immigrants are sure fire democratic votes, so, naturally, they want to make sure they can become citizens and vote. If those illegal immigrants didn't represent democratic votes, you can bet every dime you have they would be trying to secure our borders too.

Well in some states, you can get a driver's license without formal documentation. Not sure what they are exactly though (I think CA)

No when you break a law, that is illegal. They are not allowed to be here without documentation, thus they are here illegally. Does that mean I wouldn't help them the way I was taught? No! I would do what I needed to do just as I would to help anyone else. To your last point, there are plenty of people that would be willing to take on those jobs. Your blank unproven statement says nothing. I worked with many illegals before and the constant was they were never on the books paying taxes. Additionally, a fact that you are obviously uneducated about is that 1/3 of federal prisons (no small crime) is filled with illegal immigrants. So before you start your bs idealistic "Yes We Can" attitude, know the facts. Maybe you will change your mind.

Sorry OP. As an immigrant who waited 8 years with her family for a legal visa, and then another 9 for naturalization, you will get zero sympathy from me. Life elsewhere can suck, I get that, that's why we all want to come to America. There is no excuse for breaking laws, we live with the hand we are dealt.

Consequences will fall on the heads of those who break laws. If you are unable to become a licensed physician in this country (and I have no real understanding about this), that would be your price to pay for your parent's mistakes. If I were you, I would look for avenues to gain legality.

According to several online resources that I just perused, you can (apparently) call the AAMC and state that you do not know your social security number; you will then be provided with an assigned identification that can enable you to sit for the exam. However, I must warn you that it would be pretty inadvisable to reveal your undocumented status in your phone conversation, and even after taking the test, it would be incredibly difficult for you to successfully matriculate into the vast majority of US medical schools.

On another note, I really cannot grasp all of the hostile, bitter responses that this thread is beginning to receive. Although illegal immigration is a contentious subject, I've never understood the positions of those who'd call for the deportation of individuals such as the OP. The DREAM act would have allowed children of illegal immigrants to have a pathway to citizenship, provided that these children meet several prerequisites (for example, individuals with felony convictions are ineligible.) After paying steep fines/back-taxes for breaking the law (and after accomplishing either mandatory military service or attaining a college degree), these descendants of illegal immigrants would be allowed to receive citizenship; due to the strict requirements of the DREAM act, it would be very difficult to classify such legislation as a form of "amnesty." Personally, I'd strongly support the passage of the Dream Act and the re-integration of productive, socially-contributing "illegal" immigrants into American society. The non-partisan CBO found that the DREAM Act is (in the long-term) economically beneficial to the country, and I'm certain that most people would consider it to be the most comprehensive, fair, and humane proposal of its kind.
