Currently full time retail pharmacist. I'm looking to gain experience in hospital. I have zero clinical or hospital experience. I'm looking for either hospital or LTC prn or part time job. How difficult is it without residency or experience?

It’s all about who you know, not what you know.

If you know someone, it's a not an issue. If not, it depends on how much you are willing to sacrifices - graveyard shift and driving distance. It's getting harder and harder in the city when supply of residents > demand.

In major cities, difficult if you have no hospital experience. From the employer standpoint, why spend weeks training somebody who will work 1-2 shifts/month?

Not only that, if you already work full time, they'll have to train you periodically which means longer training time.

I'm good friends with two hospital pharmacy directors. Both are at med size hospitals. None of them were able to offer me a job when I asked for the PRN just b/c of the training time. Based on my schedule, M-F 9-6, I would only have weekends to train so it would be 4-5 months before i can be fully trained.

But if you get it, let me know how it works out lol if you can be fully trained in less time than that, i need to tell them that it would be possible and convince them that they need to hire me lol

this - we have one person at our hospital who works 1 shift a month - I have zero idea why we keep him around - it takes him half his shift just to read old emails. But the answer is "it depends" in most job markets you need experience to get a prn/part time job because it just isn't worth it to train someone

You will have more luck getting hired full-time than part-time. As other's have stated, it's too much of an investment to train someone to work PRN. Maybe, if you were going to be a regular part-timer working like 2 -3 days every week. But if you have no experience, any hospital that is willing to train you, is going to want full-time work out of you.
