I am new to pre-dental and have no idea of how dental schools calculate Science GPA? What happens if you retake a class? I heard that your science gpa was all of your biology's, chemistry's, math's, and physic's but is it any class that you I take that has BIO or MATH in the course name or are they more selective? I ask because I took a class that was personal finance math and it was listed as MATH 1001 and did not know if it was any MATH course or only selective courses? And my last question is do different dental schools calculated it differently or do they all do it the same? Thanks for all the help!!!

It is all calculated on your aadsas application.

This, AADSAS does everything for you.
Schools will look at 4 GPA's.
BCPgpa- Your Biology, Chem, and Physics. This is your most important.
sGPA- All other science courses including BCP are here (This includes math as well)
cGPA- Cumulative, including all sciences, and non sciences
nsGPA- Non science gpa, not important whatsoever.

Thats a list of the GPA's in order of most important to least.

If you retake a class it doesnt matter how your transcript or your school does them. AADSAS will average together your original take + your retake regardless of if your school does this, or replaces.

As for the math courses, if its listed as MAT-XXX then it will prolly count as a math course. If it is listed as anything else I would be skeptical and prolly ask an advisor (this is probably your better way to find out anyway).

On predent and here on sdn, people post their science GPA- is this including math or w/o math?

Now this might be a bit different, but what about upper div classes like Molecular and Cell biology? In Berkeley all of my upperdiv classes are called MCB do those count? They are of course science classes but don't bear the "Biology, Chemistry or Physics" in their formal titles.

Yes they all count. Courses in Berkeley's MCB department will technically fall under the "Biology" category for BCP grade calculations.

MCB = Molecular and Cell Biology

Sweet! the only doubt was that on my transcript they show as MCB but it only makes sense 🙂. Thanks for the clear answer!

What about molecular bio research under a course named "medicine" ? I know that for med schools you can "petition" it so it would count towards sGPA. Is there such thing for dent. application process?

In high school I took running start classes (community college credits) in order to receive my Associate's degree with my high school diploma. Once I switched over to my 4-year university I was told by an adviser that my GPA would be "reset" to nothing for my junior & senior years, and this is true. Seeing as how those grades show up on my 4-year transcript but are not accounted for in my GPA what will show up on my applications for dental school.

The reason I ask is that I took Biology and Chemistry at the community college and wonder if those grades will affect my sGPA when applying for dental school. This question may be too complicated to be answered as I am even having a hard time explaining it in writing.

I believe those grades will go into your sGPA for the dent. application even though your college doesn't count them at all.
I also took few classes at a CC during HS and i was told that they will be counted into my GPA
