How do DO schools evaluate SMP gpa vs overall gpa?

I know that AACOMAS combines my uGPA and graduate gpa into an overall GPA. Overall GPA is 3.24 and overall science is 3.0. I am getting screened out by the few schools I applied too based on this and was open to considering suggestions considering the fact that I completed a SMP. My undergrad GPA was 3.17 uSGPA 2.84 and my graduate GPA from the SMP was 3.53 cumulative and 3.49 science gpa. I find it really disappointing that AACOMAS combines undergrad and graduate GPA into an overall GPA as a marker to screen out for secondaries.

You sure about that? If you look at the file that goes to each school, it breaks down gpa into like 9000 different categories. I'm confused as to which ones you are talking about combining. Overall ugpa and grad gpa?

DO schools are very receptive to post-bacc GPAs. Some schools put more emphasis on your last 30-40 credits than your overall GPA. MD schools, not as much.

I had nearly identical c/sGPAs and a slightly higher pbGPA and have had several DO interviews/acceptances.

There might be a deficient area elsewhere on your app (e.g. MCAT, volunteer, clinical experience... etc). I'd recommend reevaluating your entire app/essays.

As long as you are above the minimum gpa for the school you're applying to you're fine, 'cause then you'll at least get eyes on your app.

After this they'll look at the gpa breakdown, see your uGPA & go "....ew" then they'll see you did an SMP & did well and go "hot da** ok son" & as long as the rest of your app is gucci they'll send you an II.

Also if you want to make 100% sure just call AACOMAS (they were easy to get ahold of when I applied back in the day) & the schools you are particularly interested in to see how this will be addressed.

Strong disagree, not sure what you're referring to or what your basis for this is. As an example, GW has no minimum for GPA or MCAT (that i'm aware of), but do you really think they go through every single app? They all have unwritten screening procedures that they use to cut out large sections of applicants-- because honestly reading 10k applications isn't a good use of resources.

Source: have talked to former adcoms about this.

You're in the DO forum hombre. Chill with the highly competitive MD school comparisons. It's a completely different ballgame. I'm sure some schools have low key screening methods, but to compare "___COM" to GWSOM is a stretch.

I'll reiterate, I think OP should call around to make sure they aren't wasting their time/money, but I think they will be okay. I'm not 100% sure how SMPs are handled when people apply w/ undergrad GPAs below cutoff but solid SMP GPAs.

Disagree with the idea that you will actually get eyes on your app as long as you beat the written GPA screens. From what I understand, there are plenty of unwritten rules here re quantitative side. Picked GW because they have the highest number of apps-- but at a DO school with 7k, I'd guess its the same. Still understaffed, still don't want to read all 7k apps.

OP may be fine. SMP at 3.5 is good not great, hoping theres a very solid mcat to back that up? Idk no admissions experience myself, but trying to speak based on convos I've had with adcoms.

That's fair. I don't know for certain what kind of witchcraft happens after you submit or if anyone actually laid eyes on my app at the schools that didn't wanna meet me in person when I applied.

And yes, MCAT would be a big factor too; especially in OP's position. Agreed.

At my school, we have a floor of 3.0, period. That's with or without an SMP.

Other schools will likely vary.

Best advice I can give is to contact Admissions Deans and see if they'll look at your app, despite their floors.

Hi all,

Not sure if people are still giving out advises on this thread. But I would sure love some advise. My uGPA was around 3.6 with 2 bad semesters but upward trend. Biomedical engineering major with 505->510 MCAT. I shadowed 2 doctors and got a rec letter from one of them. Roughly 2 year of research, 1 year of patient care experience and some volunteering. I only had 1 interview from an oos DO school and got waitlisted. Got rejected from 1 MD and 1 DO preII and silent from the rest of 6 program that I applied (I know this isn't a lot but money was an issue.) I'm an Ohio resident and recently got accepted into UCincinnati and UToledo SMP. My question is 1) should I do the SMP at all? 2) if yes, which one should I go? Cincinnati has higher reputation and seem to have higher success rate. However, after talking to adviser from U Toledo, it seems like I can apply in November this year and got a guarantee interview if I maintain a 3.0 in SMP program. Thank you in advance!

I don't think you need an SMP. Just a better app

I did the cincy smp several years ago. I finished the smp with a 3.4, applied with an even lower undergrad gpa and 510 mcat, and got 4 DO interviews out of 8 applications. I highly recommend the cincy SMP. It is the real deal. Feel free to PM me if you have questions.
