In spring of 2010 I had a surgery that needed extensive recovery Time ~4 months. I know adcoms like to see you account for your time so how to I show them that I was out during this time essentially doing nothing (not taking classes or doing activities). I have not included it in my PS and I don't know if I should or if there is another way of going about it. If I should include it, how should I go about doing so?

Having surgery and needing time to recover doesn't need an explanation IMO. "I had surgery and needed time to recover".

I think you are taking it a bit far (sdn does that). I don't think adcoms will even care that you took 4 months off, I doubt they will even notice for that matter. Hopefully you recovered well. Good luck!

On some secondaries, there were mini-essays that asked you to account for time taken off from school/interruptions in your education. If you needed to take a semester off, this is where you would put your explanation.

A: "I was recovering from surgery."

😀 😀

^^ OP, I have a pass to be a smart*ss here because I am in the middle of 4-months post-op from ski crash knee surgery 😛

amateur. dedicated pre-meds don't take "breaks" when having major surgery, you should have elected to stay awake during the surgery to get shadowing time. come on. :slap:

True gunner!

semi-true. I had major surgery a week before school started and didn't take time off (true story). Where are your balls OP?

But in all seriousness, recovering from surgery is an explanation in itself. Don't sweat it (unless it was a minor surgery with an average recovery period of 2 days. Then you've got some 'splainin to do lol).

I'm pretty sure I know of an active SDN'er who kept taking classes through being diagnosed with cancer and getting chemo and everything. I don't know that I would have been that strong/confident...

But yeah, secondaries may ask about time off and all that. Agree with everyone else, just explain that you were recovering from surgery.

I had a (spinal block) hernia repair a few years ago and was mad at myself for not asking ahead of time to be able to watch what they were doing. The nurses told me they would have happily wheeled in the OB mirror for the procedure but they had just done a C-section and it wasn't sterilized yet. To be fair, this was before I committed to pursing medicine, so it was less 'gunner' and more 'medical geek' 😉
