I want to learn more about osteopathic medicine and am finding that online information is not answering my all of my questions. Someone posted that they went to an osteopathic convention or conference. Where are they and where can I find out more about them?

I have planned on applying to osteopathic medical school. I live in NC and it has been very difficult to find DOs. When I did eventually reach them, the ones I contacted were to busy to allow me to shadow. What do you suggest I do about the "required letter of recommendation" from a DO.

In the meantime I have shadowed an allopathic doctor and have gotten a recommendation from her. Would that work?

I think a few of the schools say they will accept an MD letter, but most require or highly recommend a DO letter. I remember reading one post on sdn about someone who had a similar problem to yours, ie. couldn't find one to let them shadow. Especially if you want to get the rec ASAP, whoever the post was from said they called DO's and mentioned the rec requirement and they did a phone interview or something with them. Probably could take only an hour at most of their time so worth asking. Also, does NC have an Osteopathic Association? I'm from NY and on the NY Osteopathic Association website they have a database of registered DO's in NY. Might be worth looking into. If you can't find someone to let you shadow, might be worth checking out the interview possibility...hope this helps 🙂

I would suggest you call the number below and ask them to recommend someone in your area that you could shadow or meet with so you can get a DO recommendation. Some schools will not waive that requirement. VCOM, which is the closest school to you requires a DO letter. I met wiuth a DO for an hour and he wrote my LOR based on that meeting and reading my personal statement.
