It's not getting into research that's hard. It's getting to play a meanngful role in research that's difficult. Usually volunteers don't have a much better job than washing dishes and ordering supplies. The goal is to show experience in using the scientific method, generally through a publication. Few volunteers have the opportunity to get published with their lab.
Your best chance is to find a job as a research assistant or something of the sort. With this economy, good luck. You probably have a chance if you introduce yourself to researchers, explain your experience and goals, and hope for the best.
