Does anyone have any good algorithms or methods for trying to get employers to allot more pharmacy technician hours? My company is rolling out a promotion to try to get more scripts in, and not giving any more tech hours or inventory allotment.

Anyone have a "safe technician hours" calculator I can use to combat the company one based solely on the $?

Any ideas? Hints? Suggestions? or Job openings at an independent/or hospital I can run away to?

Do not bother. Corporate retail pharmacy could care less. You could present the most compelling evidence in the world for more tech hours and they could care less. There are three certainties in the life of a Pharmacist. Death, taxes and ever decreasing support hours.

Soon you will be working all by yourself filling 600 prescriptions with one minimum wage clerk.

Ahhh yes….one of the greatest paradoxes in all retail pharmacy. The completely unrealistic expectation that you will increase your business by some mythical percentage while the company cuts you tech hours by 10% for the second time in a year

Thanks for the helpful graph 😕

I seriously need to do SOMETHING though! I can't just stand idly by any more!

I was just hoping someone had some kind of data that I could maybe use to support myself in an argument for more help - because obviously common sense doesn't work with these people.....

So at 100% script count, 0 tech hours are needed? Sounds about right.

Well, Good Luck! :luck:

Might consider arguing that more hours are needed to drive service/sales or other metrics. I don't think you will be able to convince your boss that safety will be affected by cuts, but hey if it works, good for you.

I think that no matter how compelling the data you present to your district manager is your request for more hours will be denied. The corporate world is all about the bottom line and that does inevitably trickle down to us at the store level. Can you get outside help from other sources? Like pharmacy students on their IPPEs and APPEs? Or possibly a pharmacy intern? At some companies intern pay does not come out of the store budget.

My partner was a former DM and told me a lot of interesting things about how corporate judges payroll. They are looking to spend about 5% of gross sales on payroll so you may be able to argue on that point if your numbers show justification. Another thing our particular store has done (which you may not be able to do) is give up a few of the pharmacist overlap hours in favor of tech hours which in terms of dollars is a 1 to 6 ratio. We actually have more tech hours than we can use right now, but we do about 31-3200 per week which equates to approx 200,000 net profit per month.
