Happy Thanksgiving weekend everyone. I just got notified by UTMB Galveston that they're interviewing me in 3 weeks. I'll be flying in from out of state and I'm trying to figure out the most inexpensive way to get there.

It seems the nearest airports are George Bush International and Hobby at 54 and 31 miles away from the campus respectively. Is my only option to rent a car at the aiport and drive from there to the school? I assume a shuttle service would probably cost just as much if not more than renting a car. Any info would be appreciated.

Alexander

Fly in to Houston Hobby (a Southwest Airlines airport), rent a car, take a right on Airline Dr. out of the airport, and go south when you get to I-45 (a few blocks down Airline). It's about a 45 minute drive, unless it's rush hour (7am-10am; 3pm-8pm). Don't take a plane that arrives during or shortly before rush hour. Just don't.

hey alex,
theres a shuttle from IAH to galveston...im not sure if it costs anything, but you mgiht want to check on their website or something.

also, mind sharing your stats? when did you find out?

you should get info on the shuttle in your packet you receive in the mail when they grant you an interview.

I flew in from out of state and took this because it was late and dark and I could just relax, they'll drop you off at your hotel (I stayed at one of the ones on the list.) Cost about $5 to get from the hotel to the school in a taxi and then the return shuttle picked me up from the school.

Good way to go so you don't have to deal with traffic and roads that aren't lit well. And fly into Hobby if you can, its much closer.

I am wondering the same thing. I got an interview on 12/12 and a final on 12/13.....so my Dad is gonna have to take me...the 8 hr roundtrip (from Austin) will be too much.

I heard the shuttle was about $60 but this was from a website not associated with the airport.

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't think there was any info on the website about a shuttle so I'll just call them on Monday. As for my stats, I've got an average GPA and above average MCAT (mid 30's.) I received the interview invitation via snail-mail today (11/29). My interview is in the third week of December.

Strange. There was nothing about a shuttle service anywhere in my packet. Was it free and run by the school or did it cost money and was run by a separate business?

really?!? that sucks.

no free shuttle by the school. I think it may be $45-60 round trip. It was on one of the papers I got last year, I would call the admissions office. Its a business and they do many runs a day(like every hour or so from each way.)

They probably changed the interview packet from last year. If you paid $45+ for the shuttle though, I might as well rent a car. I can get one for about $45. Thanks again.

swim...except watch out for the bay sharks.

If I swam, I'd either have to go through the Panama canal (the preferred route) or all the way around the northern parts of Canada. I'm a decent swimmer, but I'm not THAT good.

The sharks wouldn't be a problem--they don't eat their own.

Congrats on the interview!!! When did y'all get the invite to UTMB? I'm still waiting to hear something, thanks!

Find I-45. Take it south untill it stops. If you don't, you'll end up in the gulf.

And eat at Guido's.

Does Galveston still offer up the 'fraternity' housing?

I loved 'big red'. Such a great school. I had a hard time deciding between galveston and san antonio....
