how do i go about finding an open PGY-2 spot for july?

I am not sure I am happy at my current PGY-1 hospital, and was thinking about trying to find somewhere else that will have a PGY-2 opening in July.
But I have NO CLUE how to go about doing that.
Do I have to pay for the resident swap thing? Or can I just contact residencies that I might be interested in?

Be very, very careful how you approach this situation. If you are "unsure" about the program, and do not have family concerns or other personal reasons for the switch, and are in good standing where you are, it might be best to leave well enough alone. Residency, in general, is not for the "faint of heart" no matter what the specialty.

Depending on your specialty there are resources on the web and 800 numbers. Too, what you have suggested about contacting programs directly is another way, but anonymously, of course. Keep in mind that if you stay in the same specialty the two program directors will have a conversation about you and the reasons for the switch. Plus, you will need the approval of the original program, since, at least in theory, you have signed a contract with the intent of finishing your residency with "X" program, even though it is a year to year renewal. The second program would not want to be perceived as "stealing" a resident from a colleague, so they will be cautious as well, considering your application carefully.

As I said at the outset, consider this move very, very carefully, and make certain that you don't burn any bridges behind you.

Strong agree. This stuff gets around, QUICK. No more public board posting. Keep it under wraps and make phone calls rather track-able and forward-able emails. I know this sounds like CIA stuff, but it's a tough community and word spreads fast.

If you're DEAD SURE you want to move, set up with find-a-resident. They're legit. I think they're AAMC. You can download all your stuff from your initial residency app.

Although I generally agree with the cautions already posted, there will come a point that you need to discuss it with people in your current program. Most program directors that I've interacted with would rather you train at a place/specialty that suits you than do poorly in, or after, -their- program and potentially show your distaste for it the rest of your career. If you want to stay in your specialty but switch programs, your PD can help find an alternative and will, in most cases, need to speak on your behalf anyway.

Unfortunately, that's not to say that every program director will respond supportively -- but I think you fare a better chance of parting on good terms (or finding that you don't really want to part at all) if you can find a way to professionally discuss the matter with them "soon," rather than June 26th telling them you never liked them anyway and are moving to Outside Hospital University.

With all that said, you -can- just contact programs you might be interested in, though that could prove to be a long process of dead-ends -- particularly right now, as most programs are locked in for the match and probably won't be willing/able to offer a spot until -after- the match. (This same problem makes it less comfortable to approach your own program about leaving right now, as it too will have locked in available match spots, so your departure could leave them short or scrambling for a second chance applicant.) But the first question you need to answer for yourself is... just how sure are you? The more sure you are, the more confident you can be about diving into the options for finding something.
