How Do Radiologists Help People?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Radiology salaries will go down a little bit, but probably not too much. Rads who make most of their money from owning equipment will take a bigger hit than those that make it from reading and doing procedures primarily.

I don't think rads have weird personalities, most I know are very normal and pleasant - and also have a well developed life outside the hospital.

As for the douche that failed first yr, really, you have ZERO shot at getting into radiology so do yourself a favor and quit medical school now, we already have enough crap clinical doctors out there.

False statement. I won't waste time with the obvious, but I have a good idea of what a radiologist does.

I guess the title of this post may suggest otherwise. You help people by reading their plain films, CT, MR, US, etc all day. You help doctors by (hopefully) providing accurate reads so that they can make a more informed decision when providing care. But do YOU feel like you are helping people?

What I don't know is/are the reason(s) why you (collectively) chose to pursue radiology as a career. What aspect of radiology (possibly besides the great hours and potential to make money) draws you to the field?

What motivates you to get out of bed in the morning and start another day?

Are radiologists passionate about the technology, the science... both? Niether?

It's kind of like that question you were asked when applying to medical school: Why do you want to become a doctor...

Well, Why did YOU choose radiology?
Bottom line, it's FUN.

Unfortunately, the practice environment is such that many fields in medicine bury you in red tape and paperwork and suck all the fun out of medicine. I did my time in internal medicine. I was GOOD. My coworkers liked me, the nurses liked me, my attendings thought I was conscientious and respected my work ethic. But, as much as I loved learning about medicine and as much as I enjoyed being able to treat a sick person and make them well, or ease the suffering of someone who could NOT be made well, I found that the majority of my job was doing useless things that had nothing to do with either medicine or helping people.

Radiology let's you make a huge difference in a patient's care, it lets you reach every corner of the hospital and every service, and best of all there is very little to distract you from what is truly your job, namely the interpretation of films.

agree with above. Not a lot of real crap work.
Most of all I feel that, with the possible exception of derm and psych, imaging findings directly affect patient care more than most because often it isn't an indirect evaluation of the disease, it is pretty definitive (or at least a definitive differential). Radiologists are the surgeon's eyes and IM's brain oftentimes.

While not going into Radiology, I'd like to chime in to the OP that people in general respond poorly to the "why did YOU do X" question. This is partly because personal motivations vary widely from person to person and are therefore of little utility to a total stranger, and partly because it comes across as a bit of laziness. Ideally, if you're considering a specialty, you are expected to have done some legwork on the subject, via personal experience (through rotations or shadowing), talking to current residents/attendings at your institution, etc. It's a question that comes across much better in person than an anonymous internet forum.

Also, there is another component of internet decorum that should be addressed, in that you are coming into a semi-established community (which can be sarcastic and occasionally rude) with hat in hand by asking a question. You can't then be all abrasive and expect a positive response. And that goes for any subforum on here; it's not relegated to radiologists by any stretch of the imagination.

I'll give an example from today:
sick kid with very odd looking mass on cxr.
I reviewed it with the rads after all of my attendings said " don't know, never seen that before".
they were able to guide the therapeutic plan by saying this doesn't look like xyz but might be abc.
if they had said something different the kid would have ended up with a potentially dangerous biopsy they didn't need or the wrong therapy.

I don't know why other specialties don't get the 3rd degree, "Why the heck are you going into Ped/IM/Surg/Psych/etc"

Maybe b/c Grey's Anatomy glorifies surgeons, House glorifies clinicians, Scrubs glorifies those funny guys, ppl think it's cool to do that. But if there was a TV show about radiologists then ppl would think it's cool & wouldn't be asking these annoying questions.

If there was a show w/ Rads driving Bentleys, hooking up w/ all kinds of nurses/techs, living it up on the golf course, sipping wine w/o worrying about being on call; then all these threads about Radiology would vanish b/c ppl would know.

I like you.

Who cares? All of this "being a real doctor" stuff is simply BS made up by people in other specialties who need such feeling to get up every morning and go to work.

Plastics is sweet - I considered it. But, I was afraid I would end up having sex with all of my good looking patients. No joke. Seriously, I don't know how you guys don't get tempted. Hot women with poor self image issues who would gladly let you tap it for a nose or boob job. I think I would go out of business.

I knew my personality - and how weak I am when it comes to temptation. This is why I eliminated plastics (see above) and anesthesia (easy access to pharm. grade narcs).

So now I spend my time in the dark room away from these temptations which would have ruined my life (and marriage I imagine). Still - the occasional hot young rad tech tests me.
I am a practicing RAD - I have a big salary and an even bigger schlong!

I am the king of all that matters in medicine.

Blah blah blah .... the only one idiot here is you, because you fail to see through the BS of the real world out there and think outside the box.

You are probably gay based on your posts, so I guess I should not be too shocked... I don't have any issues with your sexual preference, but it explains why you think more like a woman.
I didn't apply to Gas because of one major reason - easy access to pharmaceutical grade narcs.

Why put yourself in a position where you might become a drug addict or something? Even someone with very strong will power may have a tragic life event or something which could push them to just "give it a try" and it will be downhill after that.
TX has no state income tax, tort reform with medmal caps, the biggest med center in the world (Houston), higher physician reimbursement, good food, cheap real estate, decent weather and hot women.

As for the hot summer - I prefer weather that encourages the ladies to wear less clothing rather than the opposite.

Thank God you sit in a dark room all day and away from people. These posts are a classic example of the "odd" personality one would see. This is unbelievable.

I've looked at your other posts... major issues. You're upset at the world, and you scream cluster B.

Do yourself a favor and get some help, buddy.

The whole day is spent reading films and scans to help patients....

=( Maybe then Internists do physical exams for fun too.

The guy that started this forum is an idiot. What do you mean help people? Every (legal) job and/or profession helps someone in someway or they wouldnt pay you money for your services. Now shutup.
