Pardon my ignorance, but I was just thinking about the one and only summer break that occurs after the first year. Do students have to provide their own funding for living expenses or do a research program with a stipend? Thanks!

Comment: I believe, COA includes 12 months of housing and board for any loan qualification.

The first year it doesn't. It is typically only 9-10 depending on the medical school. I will let you know if I figure out how to make that stretch. You should be fine. I have to make that stretch for a wife and 2 kids...

  • budget for the extra months if you're not moving somewhere to work or stay with family
  • stay with family
  • get a job for the summer

Over borrowing relative to the cost of living and cutting back on costs as much as possible. You can also go in with a few thousand saved from even a minimum wage job to help cover those ~4 months.

I am definitely used to living a very frugal life already. I'm a nontrad incoming student and already pay for all of my living expenses. Due to being in school for so long, I do not have a nest egg unfortunately. Also, I am currently saving for my wedding which will take a chunk of money :/. I am hoping to either return to working as a server during the summer or to find a research job that pays a stipend.

Thank you everyone for the info!

Why not avoid having a wedding, and instead opt for something more private? My partner and I are going that route and using it to pay down debt and also the downpayment on our future home.

For summer work, research+stipend is probably the better way to go (esp if you're aiming to match at academic programs, or to a competitive specialty). It likely will not pay as well, but will pay dividends down the road when it comes time to apply to residency. It'll also utilize the skillsets that you've accumulated and worked hard for. Talk with your school to see what previous students have done. Just my thoughts

I lived at home, painted houses, and taught summer school. I tell my students that it is their last summer off...Ever!!! At least until they retire, so they should make it an epic vacation, if they can afford it.

Stretch your budget and score a research fellowship/ scholarship.
