I am a URM retaking an elective course (bad mistake I know) that I received a D+ in and I am wondering how adcoms in t10/t20 schools would view this, even if I'd have a good GPA afterwards? Will they just discard my application upon seeing this? How could I still be considered a good candidate with this?

Yes, academic wise it depends on your overall gpa, MCAT score, and gpa trend. One D+ wont kill your chances.

If you go through the Interview Feedback forum, you'll be surprised how many people interviewing at Really Top Schools get asked
"So what's up with that [F/D/C] in Orgo/Physics/other science course?"

I’ve been asked this twice already on my interviews this year, and my lowest grade was a C.

That being said, OP, if you have a reason for the low grades, then it gives you a great opportunity to explain why the class didn’t go well and how you changed for the better moving forward!! Use it as a chance to sell yourself 🙂
