How does PTCAS calculate your overall gpa? Do they just look at your transcript and look at the overall gpa on the bottom or do they take each class grade and calculate it?

How would they calculate it if you went to several schools before you graduated?

Do they separate your pre-reqs gpa from your overall gpa?

Thanks very much!

Short answer to your question is they take each individual class (that you have to enter in yourself) and calculate out your GPA. To simplify it a little bit they do their GPA's in ranges (ie. 2.9-3.1 = 3.0, 3.6-3.8 = 3.7, etc. or A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc.) so your GPA could be better than your transcript or worse. All your grades are bundled together so it doesn't matter how many schools you attended. They also separate your GPA into many different categories.

For a more detailed explanation on GPA calculations, PTCAS has a FAQ section on their website that is very helpful.

I have a couple of questions regarding this if you don't mind:

1. You mention about entering your classes... what does this mean?
Doesn't PTCAS do this or the applicants require to do this?

2. The 2011-12 cycle starts July 5. Do applicants have to wait till that date before they can send their transcript?

1. Unfortunately PTCAS does not enter your grades (honestly, I wouldn't trust them to do it anyways). You have to enter all schools attended and all classes taken yourself and then PTCAS will verify your grades by comparing them to your transcripts you send in. This part of the app can be very time consuming.

2. I'm not 100% sure, but if it were me I would wait until July 5th just to be on the safe side.

Also, I believe PTCAS 2010-2011 cycle is open until June 1st so if you want some practice filling out your application (so you know what to expect) just create an account and go mess around with it. It won't count against you and the account will automatically be deleted after June 1st anyways. Filling out the PTCAS application can be very stressful/frustrating and this is one way to help make it easier IMO.

This is going to be a pain in the 😱 (I have attended 4 schools... probably have taken 150+ credit hours)

Thank you for answering my questions. One last question... I think🙂

Is the PTCAS Transcript Request Form required for PTCAS to accept a transcript or is it just recommended?

If I remember right (I asked the same question last year) and they told me that they are highly recommended b/c it make the transcript processing easier, but they are not required. I would contact PTCAS and make sure though.
