How do we rank prelims? (interviews that are part of another specialty's interview day)

My question specifically pertains to the internal medicine interviews they include as part of the interview day in many specialties (mine is neurology). Can we list these programs' IM position on other advanced programs?

for example: During my Neurology interview day in U Miami, Temple, U Florida, etc I also interviewed with the IM department for prelim positions as part of the neurology day. Can I list both of these positions under ALL of my individual advanced programs?

I have 5 isolated prelim interviews. But if the above case is true, I can include 5 more prelim programs on the list for a total of 10 prelim positions I can rank for all advanced programs.

This will be program specific. Some programs will "link" their prelim and advanced spots. In that case, if you don't get a neuro spot, you can't match to a prelim. Others will be unlinked, and you can match to any combination. More commonly neuro positions are switching to Categorical -- in that case the prelim and advanced spot are combined into one.

From a practical standpoint, you'll find out when you make your rank list. Prelims that are linked will only be able to be listed on the match list where you match to the advanced spot. At least I think that's the way it works. Even if not, it won't matter -- any prelim you list that is linked will be skipped over -- you'll end up with the same match in the end.
