How do you apply to columbia and mcgill?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
columbia has an online application which you can access through their website.

I have no idea about McGill but would think that unless you are Canadian your chances there are remote (but I do not know as I never applied to Canada...)

McGill Med is a beautiful school. 22 spots are offered to non-canadians each year.

For Mcgill, you will have a few essays. Transcripts must be sent directly to them. Heavy emphasis on autobiography. Expected GPA science and non-science must be at least 3.5.

There's an online-application on their medical website along with detailed instructions for non-canadians who are applying to McGill.

thanks alot guys.

what kind of an "essay" and how many?

thanks

Sorry, I was confusing. The autobiography is long so I considered it seperate essays. Basically, you have to write an autobio of yourself -4 pages, no more tahn 25 lines per page, font can't be bigger than 12. Failure to meet the requirements gets your application trashed. Oh, and you have to send in 4 copies of your auto bio.

I don't know if the requiremetns changed but basically, the first page you have to write about why you want to be a doc, listing examples and what experience in healthcare you have that led you to wanting to become a doc.

The other 3 pages you have to address stuff like how you're a leader, how you're involved in the community, show them how you have good communication skills by giving them examples of stuff you've done that requires good interaction.

There's more info on their website. And there's also a number that you can call to talk to current medical students there who can help answer your questions about the school.

If you want to apply to the school, take notice that all the stuff the require have to be in around November. Last year, stuff ahd to be in by November 15.

If you have dual citizenship you have to tell them or your application is void. The good thing with MCG is that you'll know if you got into the school by mid march.

Regarding McGill:

Fantastic school...did my undergrad there but chose to go to a top 15 school in the US (although McGill is comparable...the reason I chose to go to the US instead despite the enormous costs of a US medical education to Canadian is that as a Canadian citizen, if you go to a US medical school if you want to remain in the US, it is MUCH easier to stay b/c u can go on an H-1B visa for residency afterwhich you can get a green card...if you graduate from a canadian medical school and then go to the US for residency, u will most likely be put on a J-1 visa, which means ur keicked out of the country for at least 2 years before trying to get a green card.but i have a couple of friends who got H-1B's after studying in canada but very difficult...BUT if ur an american citizen who studies at McGill u will have NO problems with securing top residencies in the US...the US match list for US citizens who studies at McGill is extremely impressive..e.g. Duke, harvard, UCLA, UCSF, Stanford etc..therefore, if ur a US citizen and get into mcgill, u will SAVE tens of thousands of dollars in education costs and still be able to get into the most prestigious programs).

Now, back to applying to mcgill..go to http://www.med.mcgill.ca..all the info is clearly there with specific instructions for US citizens...and they acccepted this year 25 americans..not 22., which is quite a substantial amount..IN FACT, there are MORE americans at McGill than non-Quebec Canadians (there are only 5 canadians who are not residents of quebec in each class)

hope this info helps
