Needs some advic on how a current quota is checled on NRMP's website. Several people commented on the fact that many spots have be taken via Prematch.

Hi VicAmor. Log in at NRMP then click "directory".

the way i've done it is to use the search feature, just like i'm looking to enter a program onto my Rank List. when you search by state and specialty, the list comes up with all the programs in that field in that state, and to the right of the table is each program's quota. then just close the pop-up box without clicking on a program ID to the left and your Rank List will not be changed.

I was checking the quota for the program I am going to rank and most of them have less than they actually have in freida... some of them have only 1 or 2 seats left..
does this mean all of these seats have been given out in pre matches??😕

Yes

do you think i have been somehow screwing up in all of my interviews..cuz al the programs i have given interviewed at give prematches, but i havent been offered even one?? not even an indication...

It doesn't always mean they gave it as a prematch. Some programs take fewer people than they are approved for. For example, I know one program that accepts two fewer people than they are approved for to improve the senior experience, but will accept more if there are gaps at junior levels for whatever reason.

You have to also remember that, by agreement to enter the nrmp, programs can only fill up to 25% of their slots with applicants outside the match (pre-match in cluded). They must also change their quotas accordingly up to the final deadline which is -- coincidentally -- today. 😛

I do not believe this is true. In general, the NRMP requires that overall 75% of the available spots be in the match, but that is for the entire system and not for individual programs. If too many of the slots come out of the match early, it collapses. This is not a problem in the main match because US Seniors must go through the match, hence programs that want those seniors must leave slots in the match.

In the Fellowship match, it would be easy for programs to remove their slots as there are no such rules. The 25% rule (or 75% rule, whichever way you want to look at it) is explained on the Fellowship Match website. Again, this is for the overall match, not by individual program.

If I'm wrong, let me know!

I had an IM program that contacted me a few days before my interview to tell me they had filled all (100% of the slots) by prematch.

I think a lot of great students do not get offered prematches. I got offered prematches at program that I know interviewed better applicants scholastically. My USMLE's were mediocre at best - a program that had alot of USMG's (and FMG's that had better USMLE's) there offered me a prematch.

just wondering, what exactly do you mean by US seniors??

You are completely right, I misread the rules, and recant. However, the deadline for quota change was yesterday, so now the numbers are set in stone. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if programs are obligated to decrease the number after they've filled slots with prematches.

From the NRMP website:
A U.S. senior is a fourth-year medical student in an LCME-accredited U.S. allopathic school of medicine. A student with a graduation date after July 1 in the year before the match is considered a U.S. senior. U.S. seniors are sponsored by their medical schools in the NRMP Main Residency Match. Information about the results of the Match is sent to the U.S. senior's school of medicine.

If a senior student is withdrawn from the Matching Program because he/she will be ineligible to enter graduate medical education on July 1 in the year of the Match, the student may accept a position outside the Matching Program provided training will begin no later than February 1 in the year following the Match; however, if the student elects to participate in the Match, he/she will be a sponsored applicant.

So, basically, for this Match which happens in March 2008, any 4th year medical student graduating between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2008 from an LCME accredited school in the US/Canada is a US Senior.

Programs are stuck accepting as many students as they match. The match is binding on both ends -- I must accept you and you must accept my spot. So, if I have a program with 10 total slots and I prematch 3, I change my quota to 7. If I leave my quota at 10 and match all 10, I now have 13 interns. The ACGME limits the number of trainees in my program, and going over is not allowed except in special circumstances.

So, programs definitely adjust their quotas. However, I can still save some for prematches -- i.e. assuming the same program with 10 slots and 3 prematches, I could put 5 slots in the match and then work on trying to prematch 2 more people. So, some people out there may still get more prematch offers.
