How do you know if a school is safety, reach, match etc

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am interested in this LizzyM score thing. Perhaps a few more words on how to use it to roughly screen schools? If I have a LizzyM score of 77, and Washington U has a score of 76... Does this mean that Washington U could be considered a "target" or a "reach"?

I mean, what's the range to look at there? Tulane (score of 67) I imagine would be a "safety" but what would Tufts (score of 71) be? Target? Reach?

(Of course we are ignoring all other things about me, and also about the schools, such as the standard unpredictability of Ivies or any of the top 20)

If you have a 77 you may apply where you please but do pay attention to the proportion of interviewed non-resident applicants if you are a non-resident and consider what you are looking for in a school and your career (research, academics, service in rural communities, primary care, etc?) as schools will be sizing you up for "fit" which could preclude an interview on those grounds. Shoot for at least 15 applications as even the top schools are unable to interview every well qualified applicant.

For example in the MSAR Emory's Medical School boasts that the median gpa of the students it accepts is a 3.8. In US and Rankings, it shows that the average gpa of the students who actually enroll at Emory's medical school is a 3.66. That is a .14 drop. This clearly shows that most students that have 3.8+ gpas decide not to attend Emory's medical school probably because they got in somewhere better, the kids who decide to enroll usually have lower stats.

I think I love you. You may have just explained why an Emory adcomm told me why I am likely to get an interview offer from them despite the fact my gpa is a 3.49. I hadn't considered Emory in my league until he told me that. That is why I went to them for advice!

Your likelihood of getting an interview at Emory has nothing to do with your gpa and everything to do with the life experiences and point of view you bring to the table.

As they say in the diet ads: Results not typical

He knew one thing which was kind of unusual going into our meeting. Early in the meeting he said something about a likely interview based on that. When I told the adcomm member that I technically I hadn't really been considering Emory thinking it was out of my league (I had originally ruled it out early based on LizzyM score even though I would have loved to apply), the man looked as if I just shot his puppy. By the end of the meeting (reading CV and PS) I felt like he was trying to recruit me. He later had medical students talk to me and try to convince me to apply. It was a very strange experience on my end given all the attention.

This thread really helped convince me that perhaps it's not completely in vain.
