My dad is very happy for me b/c I will be the first in the family to become a doctor/dentist (Asians from my parent's generation think dentist and doctors are the same since dentist need to go through med school first in Asia). However, He also feels a bit painful to pay LOTS of $$ for my education.

My uncle thinks that I am going to become a pHD in dental science just b/c there is "doctorate " in Doctorate of Dental Surgery 🙄

My dad acts like he doesn't care (yet brags to co-workers), and my mom is happy but reminds me everyday to apply for loans. My aunt is clearly the most excited one as she makes me forward her my interview & acceptance e-mails so she can rub it in her evil sister-in-law's face.

Sigh.

In a lot of countries dentist and MDs are lumped together. The only difference is that dentist study in the department of odontology. They go through the same admissions process pretty much.

I think my mom was happier than I was when I told her I got accepted into dental school. My mom cried, my dad and grandpa got teary eyed..aww

My parents were happy I got in, but they weren't suprised. I think they had more faith in me than I had in myself. In fact, getting accepted was somewhat anti-climatic. People were happy, but it's not like winning the lottery - you can really gauge your chances before you actually get accepted.

I would feel pained if I was paying for my childs dental education. Even if I had the means I would tell them to take care of it themselves - it's part of the experience.

Both my parents were happy. My bro is a pharmD so we already got one doctor. But a few of my friends were crazy when i told them. They were way way way more happy than i was. Im glad i got some pretty awesome friends. Or maybe they are glad to see me leave 😕

Does anyone know about being hooded when you graduate. At my bros pharmD graduation hey was hooded by his favorite professor, but some people had relatives hood them. At dentists graduation do you get hooded, and can it be by a pharmD or does it have to be by a dentist?

I'm just glad I can tell people I got in instead of "I don't know yet" every five seconds. My parents seemed happy but not excited. Some of my friends didn't even care. I guess I have crappy friends. But some of my friends were waaay excited, so.

They were way more excited after I took the DAT. I figured I would get in after having done pretty well on it. It was a little anti climactic.

I already have like 100 family members who are in the field so they thought I was typical.

im sure your non-excited friends were just jealous. I had one friend be all sad and say " Your going to make more money than me.... i wish i chose a diff career path". My response was that he doesnt have to spend 4 more years in school.

Yeah, they probably were jealous, since they were my pre-dent friends. It's hard to get excited for people when you're uncertain of your fate. That's why we're friends, letsgfuad. Because we're both going to dental school and can be excited for one another. And because we were almost engaged that one time. Curse creighton.

My mom started jumping up and down and screaming. My dad has been telling everyone he knows. My sister was so happy I think she almost started hyperventilating. My husband, who is extremely laid back, said "cool."

I think my parents are very proud of me because they were first generation college grads that had to work extremely hard to get their college degrees, and I will be the first person in my whole extended family to get a professional degree!!!!!

i'm jewish so i'm expected to become a doctor, lawyer or accountant
every jewish mom's dream.
good luck to you all

I wish my family would calm down already... they're pretty excited...this has been a really long time coming. I'm also the first one to get my bachelors degree in my family... let alone 2 masters degrees and now a doctorate.

I have two top choices and I got a call from one of them while I was interviewing at the other school. I went to the restroom during a break and called the school back and found out that I was accepted. I called my parents there for like 20 seconds so I didn't really get to see/hear their reactions. I guess I could have waited until I flew back home, but I just couldn't wait to tell my folks 😀 Perhaps I will get another chance with this other school I was interviewing at. 😉🙂😛

Haha true on both parts. I saw and recognized the foreign area code friday morning and said to my mom, hey- its _____ school... and just smiled 🙂
I haven't seem to find anyone yet that was just ecstatic about me getting in- they were all just happy.

Back in the day it was tradition in my family for the parent to pay for education. I think my dad is going to drop that rule just for me :[

Well i'm excited for you 😉

I'm Mexican American. I'm also the first to pursue higher education post undergrad. My parents were almost indifferent when I told them I got into dental school. I think they'd be happier if I said I was pregnant.

hahahahahahhahahahahahahahhahahaha

When I told my folks that I was accepted, my family and some of my friends got too excited that they almost freaked me out. Then, I truely realized how much they care. I'm now in the process of recovering from all the waiting and stress I've gone through. I'm a re-applicant and I got in the third year!!

In my country people with the best grades usually go to dental school and those that can't make it to dental school go to med school..
All of my family are happy for me except for my dad because I didn't get a offer from the school that was 'his' first choice 🙄

I'm with you guys as far as the anticlimactic finale. No doubt I was stoked, but I probably fantasized about the moment too many times and ruined it. Plus, some info was leaked out on the school website about 4 weeks prior. That dampened the suprise a bit. Getting a call from the dean was a bit sureal though. My wife was probably the happiest b/c she loves where we're going and she hates that I have to work nights.

I would feel pained if I was paying for my childs dental education. Even if I had the means I would tell them to take care of it themselves - it's part of the experience.
If I may generalize and stereotype, asian parents are willing to make a lot of financial sacrifices for their kids; but when the folks are old, the kids are expected to take them in. Paying for their children's education is like their way of getting a pension.

hahahaha... i have to second this! this is exactly how it is in my family! ill be the doctor, my bro's a lawyer, and another who's done accounting by degree and is now in business school... its a formula!!

people were jumping up and down... even those i didn't know

My dad is a dentist - and this is my 2nd time applying. He knew how hard it is to get in nowadays....so when I told him he flipped out. My friends and family have all been rooting for me after getting shot down the 1st year. My dad tells all his patients, and when I told my mom - she started crying in Bloomingdales and telling random people "my son just got accepted into dental school!!!!!!!!!"

I don't think my parents really understand how difficult it really was to get in to dental school. They were like "Oh, that's great, honey. Congratulations." I think they just expected me to get in. They'll be more excited when my little sister FINALLY graduates from her 2-year business/secretary school just because they never really though she would. Oh well, my wife's parents (who are Japanese, if that matters) were happy enough to put down half the cash for our new car!😀

my parents are in another country,
and when i got accepted, it was 3 a.m. there, so i waited until it was 8 a.m. there to call.
apparently, my mom has awake the whole night waiting for me to call,
and since i didn't she thought i got rejected.

When i called later, she first yelled at me for not calling right away,
and then she yelled more when she realized it was no longer a problem. 😀😀

yeah..

having Asian parents..
it's an exciting moment when you tell them you got into a professional school!

No reaction. All I got was a text message that said "Gud" from my mom. She said "Congratulations" was too long to text. Dad was more concern about when I was going to cancel my other interviews (so they don't have to help me pay for flights and stuff). That was last weekend... this weekend, I will insist that they at least take me out. 😛

My little sister said congratulations.

And, my little brother ignored me.

However, my aunt did take me out to IHOP. 🙂

Yeah your my best friend on studentdoctor. Thats special. Long distance relationship can work 😍😍 Hey we still have a chance at creighton.

well, my dad was happy, he said he knew i would get in...he was elated when i got scholarship offers....in his words.... he knew i was good, but not that good🙄...my mom on the other hand flipped out... i called her from work and on purpose sounded all sad and as if something was wrong....then i was like well the university of..... and she flipped out- starting screaming, singing, and praying...all in a different language than english...the first words that came to my mind was are you at work?... luckily she was at home...lol...when i got home from work...she was going in circles around me dancing and singing...i was like okay...stop.....
-ld

My mom started screaming and was crying when I told her😳 And its the first time I have seen my dad be so happy, he was smiling that entire evening.

Amen on the Asian parents! Congrats 🙂

Hmmm... My parents didn't want me to leave Buffalo for my #1 so when I was accepted last year, I kept it to myself for awhile. When I told my parents, my mom didn't seem too happy. My dad seemed indifferent... but I was moving away, so I guess I understand that and of course $$ was a concern of theirs. Guess I didn't mind the thought of being 160K in debt.

SO now you can imagine the pressure I put on myself since I am a jewish mom. 😉

My parents were very happy and my wife also, my kids, well...they're happy just to see daddy! The joy is that they love you no matter what you do!

Hey, I'm in Utah right now, that's not so long distance. Also, YESSS I finally have a best friend. 😀

what a dad! congrats!

my parents were ecstatic! haha they were so happy that they called it their xmas present haha. now i get bugged EVERY DAY to apply for loans. 😎 my mom already decided to take it upon herself to make "connections" for me with her dentist friends so i can take over their office later by inviting them over for a homecooked dinner. haha

My mom told everyone she knew in a matter of hours. She even bragged about how selective dental schools are with specific stats from the acceptance letters... it's pretty funny.
My dad is definitely proud of me, but he's a blue collar guy, and even though he's never said so, and supports me, I think he's always been kind of upset that I never wanted to enter a career similar to his.
My girlfriend, I think is ready to get married (she should slow down though).
My brother and sister are happy for me, as are my friends, especially my predent friends who know how tough it is.

Same thing with any parent (especially a mom) on Long Island. "My son's a doctor." "My son's a lawyer." "My son's a dentist." All of these work just fine for them.🙄

haha lol. that made me laugh!

Ever since i told my dad..his been shaking my hand at random times throughout the day, and congratulates me for getting in hehe 😀
My sister screamed over the phone in joy once i told her, although she did accuse me that if i was lying, she would come after me. PUAHAHA. and then she instantly changes into her sweetest voice and goes..do you need any allowance money? lol
My mom..she literally cried in tears and gave me a big hug that made me teary😉

Heck yeah I ski. The resorts here are going to be great in a couple of days. Outside my apartment there's like 2 feet of snow, I don't know what its like in the mountains. Is crested butte a resort or something?

Its a low key resort. I have never skied there, but am excited to check it out. The next trip i plan to ski is Alta, Utah. Hopefully when i graduate from d school i can land a 3-4 day dental job and work weekends so i can ski weekdays. Although with my luck i will break my wrist.

Man, I live like 20 minutes from little cotton wood canyon (that's where Alta is, if we're unclear). You should look me up.

My (Asian) parents just expected me to get in.. they didn't realize how hard this process was for me. So once I told them, they acted like it was nothing special and that it was a common thing. 🙁

mom wanted to bring balloons and cake to a restaurant. I allowed the cake, but not the balloons. She secretly painted on my cars windows with window chalk... and squealed like a tween at a Hannah Montana concert.

Dad just said he was proud.

My sister cried.

When I told my parents they told me they would pay for my education and I just about freaked out, then they laughed, and told me my wife could pay for it.

Oh i told my mom that she may have to co-sign on my loan. She said no so i dunno.

I will. How much do places cost a night around there. we will have to ski... you'll probably show me up.
