So, I'm not applying till next year, but I would really like to have an idea of my eligibility for the Financial Assistance Program that AMCAS has.
I'm a 28-year old postbacc student. I've been living on $12k per year for a while. My father, who was on disability my whole life, died when I was 16. My mom, as of two years ago, has a total and permanent disability (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), and so her only "income" now is disability.
BUT, she remarried when I was 20, to a guy that has a middle-class income. Is my eligibility based on his income? He's never had custody of me, and even though he makes around $60k, he's been putting an enormous amount into remodeling their house to be wheelchair-accessible for my mom, buying a wheelchair lift van, etc. It's not like money is falling out of the sky over here. He has kids from another marriage, and if he ever gave anyone money for college, it would be them. The FAP application feels a little unfair if I can't account for any of this. Help? Should I just email AMCAS?
