been browsin the interview feedbacks and for most schools, the majority of reviews are positive. you read about people's experiences in threads and they feel the interview went great, but not everyone gets in. are pre-meds bad at evaluating how the interview really went?

Most interviews are not hostile, unnerving, or uncomfortable. In fact, most people do have positive interview experiences. (Although only the horror stories are fun to tell.)

But there are just far more applicants to medical school then there are spots. Just because your interview does go well, doesn't mean that you are as qualified as anyone else.

I think most of the time people's interviews do go well. MOST interviewers are not trying to make it a bad experience... the point is to get to know the candidate, not send them home feeling like things went terribly. Once in a while you here an interview horror story, but I think that is rare nowadays as schools tend to discourage "pressure" interviews, etc.

That being said, school's still can't take everyone who has a good interview experience... the # of incomings still has to be narrowed down.

Whoops, ColoMD beat me to posting... I didn't mean to restate what he said 🙂.

be yourself. be honest. relax.

Actually, schools want you to try to anticipate what they are going to ask and to committ to memory lengthy answers to these questions based on research you do online.

Maybe people who have bad interviews are less comfortable in posting the results (similarly to how people with low MCAT scores don't proudly boast them around here).

hahaha. the quality of the interview is not a reliable indicator of admission or rejection. although i have met people who have said that they "knew" they got in after their interviews.

Yeah, and I knew Eli Manning was going to start over Kurt Warner this season for the Giants... 🙄 ... I think the reason most people feel their interviews often go well is psychological - they want to believe it went well because they want to believe their interviewer liked them...

I had max scores at two interviews last year, med interviews really are not that bad. With your numbers you just need to show that you're normal and have interest in the school.

Ha! And I knew VA Tech was going to kick SUC's butt in the second half

I think that it's really hard to predict how the INTERVIEWER felt about the interview....it could be completely different from your experience. For example, let's say you are the interviewer, and the applicant is talkative and relaxed. However, what the applicant is saying contradicts his application and you realize that the applicant is full of bs....you can either a. humiliate the applicant by pointing this out, or b. smile, thank him and walk him to the door. In case b, the applicant feels it went well, the interviewer was kind and he talked a lot. However, in reality, it was a bad interview.

I guess I'm just trying to say you never know what the interviewer is thinking.

My worst interview, I thought it went horribly. I was pounded and grilled by my interviewer and forced to admit that I just didn't know about certain issues. I was questioned on my values and he was openly incredulous about my answers. I was 100% positive that a rejection was in the mail....the acceptance came 2 weeks later. I guess this interviewer's goal was to see how I reacted under stress and if I stuck with my answers instead of telling him what he wanted to hear. By being myself, I passed the test!

Be yourself, Relax, dont talk about money or your parents forcing you into med school
