How Does Having a Non-Science Major affect getting into a SURP program?

Okay, so I would really like to get into an undergraduate research program this summer.

I am a sophomore, my major is in Animal Science (in the College of Agriculture). By summer I will have completed organic and inorganic chemistry, intro biology, and zoology. As well as animal science classes like intro to nutrition and genetics.

After freshman year I have a 4.0 gpa, and I anticipate maybe one B this semester, so my gpa isn't a problem.

I just want to know if having an animal science major would make me less likely to get into a program. That and if anyone had any recommendations of programs I should apply to...

Thanks.

I don't think you will be in disadvantagedous position.

Just make sure to apply broadly, and get letters of recommendations early from professors you know well.

Also, see if your own school offers SURF program. Then, you can make sure to let the committee know in person of your strong desire to be enrolled in the program as well as your abilities to do research with solid background in science.

Your school should have a website with a long list of SURF programs offered throughout the nation.

I personally applied to about 8 programs for the summer before my junior year and got into only one. My major was biomedical sciences, and I had about a year of research experience already in a biology lab.

So once again, make sure to apply broadly, and see if you can find one at your own school. Also, fill out applications as you would for applying to college or medical schools, because SURF programs are quite competitive as each program offers only about 10-20 spots per summer.

Okay Thanks,

I'm just nervous because I don't really have any research experience. I come from a smaller university (about 6500 students) and so there aren't a lot of research opportunities. We also don't have an internship program here.

I'm going to talk to two of my chem professors today to ask for lor.

So far I'm applying to progams at:
Medical School of Wisconsin
University of Minnesota
University of Vermont
Pittsburgh
and Univ. of Mass. Medical School

Is that enough? How competitive are these programs.
